"Observed and simulated magnetic pattern in a thin metal film, generated by a strong ultrafast electromagnetic field pulse parallel to the film surface."  Cover art from
Physical Review Letters Vol. 102, Issue 21
(29 May 2009) from article by S. J. Gamble* et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 (2009) 217201.
 * Sara completed her UF Honors thesis in the Meisel Group and went to Stanford University where she received her PhD in Applied Physics.

Textbook and Links:  The “official” textbook for this course is “Introduction to Electrodynamics, 3rd edition” by David J. Griffiths, see the “official” UF bookstore link here.  As you will see, the UF bookstore offers a price of about $160 for a new hardcover copy.  In December 2010, I was able to find, via web-based vendors, the same hardcover book for about $130 and a paperback version for about $60.  In addition, I was able to find the 2nd edition of the same book for about $14.  At this time, as far as I can tell, there are only small changes between the two versions for the first six chapters, which we expect to cover in this course.  If you anticipate taking the second semester of this course, which I am not scheduled to teach in the near future and which covers the material after Chapter 6, you may wish to know that there are some more significant differences between the two versions.  Some notes about corrections are given on the author’s webpage, see David J. Griffiths.
