Here are the details of Saturday's tour of the NASA Kennedy Space Center: (1) We need to be at the KSC Visitor Center no later than 12:30 pm. NASA has been nice enough to allow us to join a group of NASA summer interns on the tour, so it is important that we arrive on-time. To accomplish this, and to allow us to grab lunch to eat before we go inside, we should leave Gainesville around 8:00 am. Let's meet at 8:00 sharp at the southeast corner of the Keys Complex, outside the building occupied by the non-UF REU participants. (For the locals who are living elsewhere, enter the parking lot behind the Keys by turning off Woodlawn Drive at the northwest corner of Flavet Field; the REU building is located near the far end of the lot from Woodlawn.) I would prefer that all vehicles stick together on the journey. However, to allow for separations or unavoidable delays, I will distribute written directions for getting to the KSC during Friday's NHMFL trip. (2) There will be 16 of us in the group. I will drive the Physics van, which has seating for seven or eight. From the feedback that I got earlier in the week, the rest of the group can easily be accommodated in private cars. The potential drivers include Adam, Dan, Mark, Jerry, Sean, and (I think) Matt. I believe that Michelle also has a car, but I forgot to ask her if she wants to drive. The Physics van will head back to Gainesville on Saturday evening. If there is interest, we could have dinner before departing the Cape, or stop along the way (rest-stop food---yum!). I would guess that we will get back to Gainesville between 8:00 and 9:30 pm (depending on whether or not we have dinner). I assume that at least some of the drivers will want to follow a different schedule, perhaps remaining overnight on the coast or else heading to Orlando. Rather than me trying to organize the car-pooling, I ask that if you have any interest in this direction, you try to hook up with a like-minded driver (or if you're driving, compatible passengers). PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION (EITHER BY EMAIL BEFORE 10 PM THURSDAY, OR IN PERSON DURING THE NHMFL TRIP FRIDAY): (a) riding in the physics van; (b) driving a car; (c) riding as a passenger in a car (in which case, please tell me the driver's name). (3) Currently, coolers, backpacks, or other large bags are not allowed through the main gate---all such items must be left in the vehicles. No outside food is allowed into the KSC. Small bags, purses, etc are allowed, but will be inspected. All visitors and their belongings must pass through a metal detector. It is OK to bring in cameras, water bottles, and sunscreen (not that we'll be outside that much). There is no requirement to bring a specific form of ID since we won't be badged, but it is a good idea to have some ID anyway. There are no specific clothing requirements for this tour, but you should be prepared for a wide range of temperatures (and maybe rain). The normal admission fee ($26 + tax) has been waived. However, you will have a chance to blow your money on souvenirs at the visitor center. (4) Due to security concerns, there will be fewer stops inside facilities at KSC than would have been the case in previous years. We will visit one of the launch pads (Pad B), the Apollo/Saturn V Center, and the Visitor Center. For other buildings, we will be confined to a drive-by in the bus. The tour will last roughly 5 hours. Please let me know if I have omitted any information you need.
