Research Experiences for Undergraduates

This schedule is still under development. Events will be added and/or rescheduled, so please check back.

Sat May 27 noon       Earliest check-in time at the Keys Residential Complex. Upon check-in, pick up a Physics REU packet containing a welcome letter, campus map, etc.

WEEK 1
Tue May 30   First day of REU program
    10 am Campus tour for non-UF participants. Meet at main desk of the Keys Residential Complex.
    noon Orientation meeting for all REU participants (2205 NPB)
    12:15 pm Welcome lunch in Physics for participants, faculty mentors, and departmental representatives (2205 NPB)
Fri Jun 2 3 pm Seminar/lab tour: Prof. Amlan Biswas will talk about his group's research into manganites, then lead a short tour of his lab. (Meet in NPB 2165.)

WEEK 2
Mon Jun 5 10:00 am Laboratory safety workshop led by Mark Yanchisin, UF Environmental Health and Safety (2165 NPB—note change of location). All REU participants must attend!
Fri Jun 9 3 pm Seminar/lab tour: Prof. Gary Ihas will talk about his group's research into quantum turbulence, then lead a short tour of his lab. (Meet in NPB 2165.)

WEEK 3
Fri Jun 16 11:30 am Laboratory tours within the NPB led by REU student volunteers. Although intended for visitors from the REU site at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, these tours are also open to other REU participants. (Meet in the main lobby of NPB.)
12:15 pm Lunch with visitors from the REU site at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee (2205 NPB).
1 pm Visit to the McKnight Brain Institute. This optional visit will consist of two parts, each lasting approximately 30 minutes: (1) A lecture on the physics of magnetic resonance imaging and an introduction to some of the research being performed at the Brain Institute, presented by Prof. Tom Mareci. (2) A tour of the Brain Institute's magnet facilities.

Those interest in participating in the tour should gather in the NPB main lobby at 1:00 pm sharp. The Brain Institute is a 10-minute walk each way, so consider bringing raingear in case of showers.


WEEK 4
Fri Jun 23 3:00 pm Seminar/lab tour: Prof. Tarek Saab will talk about his group's research employing cryogenic detectors to search for cold dark matter. (Meet in NPB 2165.)

WEEK 5
Fri Jun 30 3:00 pm Seminar/lab tour: Prof. Stephen Hagen will talk about his group's research on dynamics of biomolecules, then lead a short tour of his lab. (Meet in NPB 2165.)

WEEK 6
Tue Jul 4 Independence Day (University closed)
Fri Jul 7 all day Field trip to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee. Board the bus on Stadium Road outside the Keys Complex at 7:30 am. Eat breakfast beforehand; the bus will not stop on the (2-hour) journey to Tallahassee. Lunch will be provided at the Magnet Lab. You should be dropped back to the Keys Complex by 6 p.m.

WEEK 7
Mon July 10 1–3 pm Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on scientific writing skills, led by Dr. Dianne Cothran, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication (2205 NPB—note location)

Important: Bring to this session a description (three or four well-organized paragraphs) of the purpose, plan, and scope of your REU research project. This description, which may eventually form the introduction to your end-of-project report, should be accessible to your non-expert peers. It should be prepared with a word processor (use whatever system you'll employ for preparing your final report) and printed double-spaced. Use of literature citations is optional.

WEEK 8
Mon Jul 17 1–3 pm Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on scientific writing skills (2205 NPB—note location)
Fri Jul 21 3:00 pm REU Meeting: CANCELED

WEEK 9
Fri Jul 28 3 pm Deadline for submitting first version of end-of-project report to Kevin Ingersent (2162 NPB)
3:45– 5:45 pm Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on oral communication skills, led by Dr. Kim McCall, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB)&mdashnote change of date and time

WEEK 10
Mon Jul 31 3:45– 5:45 pm Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on oral communication skills (2165 NPB)—note change of time

During this session, you will be expected to deliver the introduction to you final presentation. More detailed instructions will be provided during the first session.

Wed Aug 2 1 pm Deadline for submitting final version of end-of-project report to Kevin Ingersent (2162 NPB)
1–4 pm Student presentations
