Summer 2007 Research Program:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates

(Last updated July 19, 2007)

Sat May 26 noon       Earliest check-in time at the Keys Residential Complex. Upon check-in, pick up a Physics REU packet containing a welcome letter, campus map, etc.

WEEK 1
Tue May 29   First day of REU program
10:00 am Campus tour for non-UF participants. Meet at main desk of the Keys Residential Complex.
11:45 am Orientation meeting for all REU participants (2205 NPB)
noon Welcome lunch in Physics for participants, faculty mentors, and departmental representatives (2205 NPB)
Fri Jun 1 3:00 pm REU Meeting: Prof. Stephen Hill will give an overview of how science is performed at high magnetic fields: how the fields are generated and some of the experiments that are performed (2165 NPB).
Sun Jun 3   Cook-out at Lake Wauburg North Park. Food and drinks will be provided. Bring your Gator-1 card to allow admission to the park, as well as access to canoes, kayaks, volleyball equipment, etc.

The Physics van will leave from the Keys Complex around 10 a.m. You are welcome to set out later if you have your own transportation. Lunch will be served around noon.

Drivers: Head south on 13th Street (Highway 441) for about 8 miles. The entrance to the North Park is in the left-hand side of the road. Note: If you reach the entrance to the South Park, you have gone too far and should turn around.

WEEK 2
Mon Jun 4 1:00 pm Laboratory safety workshop led by Mark Yanchisin, UF Environmental Health and Safety (2205 NPB.) All REU participants must attend!
Fri Jun 8 2:00 pm REU Meeting: Prof. Ho-Bun Chan will provide a brief introduction to his research into micromechanical and microelectromechanical systems, followed by a tour of his lab. (Note change in time. Meet in 2165 NPB.)

WEEK 3
Fri Jun 15 2:00 pm REU Meeting: Prof. Yoonseok Lee will give a brief talk about his research into low-temperature properties of fluids and solids, and then lead a tour of his lab. (Note change in time. Meet in 2165 NPB.)

WEEK 4
Fri Jun 22 3:00 pm REU Meeting: Prof. Guido Mueller will talk about the space-based LISA gravitational wave detector project (2165 NPB).

WEEK 5
Fri Jun 29 11:30 am Laboratory tours within the NPB led by REU student volunteers. Although intended for visitors from the REU site at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, these tours are also open to other REU participants. (Meet in the main lobby of NPB.)
12:15 pm Lunch with visitors from the REU site at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee (2205 NPB.)
1:00 pm Visit to the McKnight Brain Institute. This optional visit will consist of two parts, each lasting approximately 30 minutes: (1) A lecture on the physics of magnetic resonance imaging and an introduction to some of the research being performed at the Brain Institute, presented by Prof. Tom Mareci. (2) A tour of the Brain Institute's magnet facilities.

Those interest in participating in the tour should gather in the NPB main lobby at 1:00 pm sharp. The Brain Institute is a 10-minute walk each way, so consider bringing raingear in case of showers.

WEEK 6
Wed Jul 4 Independence Day (University closed)
Fri Jul 6 all day Field trip to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee. Board buses on Stadium Road by Williamson Hall at 7:40 am. Eat breakfast beforehand; the bus will not stop on the (2-hour) journey to Tallahassee. Lunch will be provided at the Magnet Lab. You should be dropped back at Williamson Hall by 6 pm.

WEEK 7
Mon July 9 1–3 pm Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on scientific writing skills, led by Dr. Dianne Cothran, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB).

Important: Bring to this session a description (three or four well-organized paragraphs) of the purpose, plan, and scope of your REU research project. This description, which may eventually form the introduction to your end-of-project report, should be accessible to your non-expert peers. It should be prepared with a word processor (use whatever system you'll employ for preparing your final report) and printed double-spaced. Use of literature citations is optional.

Fri Jul 13 3:00 pm Tour of the University of Florida Microkelvin Laboratory. (Meet in the main lobby of NPB at 3:00 sharp. We will walk over to the Microkelvin lab.)

WEEK 8
Mon Jul 16 1–3 pm Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on scientific writing skills (2165 NPB)

WEEK 9
Mon Jul 23 1–3 pm Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on oral communication skills, led by Dr. Stephanie Webster, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB)
Fri Jul 27 3 pm REU Meeting: Prof. David Reitze will talk about the LIGO gravitational wave detector (2165 NPB)

The start of this meeting is the deadline for submitting the first version of your end-of-project report to Kevin Ingersent
