Summer 2019 Program:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Week 1
Sun. May 26 -
Mon. May 27 		Participants arrive in Gainesville.
Tue. May 28 Campus tour, orientation meeting, and lunch with mentors. Partipants staying at Oakbrook Walk meet at the apartment complex office at 9:30 am. UF student participants meet in NPB 2205 for the orientation meeting at 11:30 am. Lunch with research mentors will start at 12 noon in NPB 2205.
Wed. May 29,
10:00am-12:00pm 		Laboratory safety workshop led by Mike Yost, UF Environmental Health and Safety. All REU participants must attend. (NPB 2205)
Fri. May 31,
2:45 pm 		REU Meeting: Dr. Brent Gila will give a tour of the UF Nanoscale Research Facility. Meet outside of the Physics department office next to NPB 2205 and we will walk over to the NRF together.
Sat. June 1,
12 noon		 Cook-out at Lake Wauburg North Park. Food and drinks will be provided. Bring your Gator-1 card to allow admission to the park, as well as access to canoes, kayaks, volleyball equipment, etc.
Week 2
Fri. June 7,
2:00 pm		 REU Meeting: Prof. Sergey Klimenko will give a talk on Applying to Graduate School. (NPB 2205)
Week 3
Mon. June 10,
all day		 NHMFL Field Trip: We will drive up to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory facilities in Tallahassee for a tour and presentations by scientists there and return in the evening. During our lunch break I will also ask each student to give a brief (2 minute) presentation on their research area and what they will be doing for their summer project.

3:00 pm		 REU Meeting: Paul Fulda will give a presntation on LIGO and LISA gravity wave research followed by a tour. (NPB 2165 - note different room)
Week 4
Fri. June 21,
2:00pm		 REU Meeting: Visit with John Mocko and the UF's Physics demonstration room to plan for outreach activity on Monday, July 1. (NPB 1002)
Fri. June 21,
3:00 pm		 REU meeting: Prof. David Tanner will give a presentation on Optical Probes of High Temperature Superconductory followed by a tour. (NPB 2205)
Week 5
Wed. June 26,
1:00pm		 REU Meeting: Pracice for outreach event with John Mocko for outreach activity on Monday, July 1. (NPB 1002)
Fri. June 28,
3:00pm		 REU Meeting: Prof. James Hamlin will give a presentation on Materials Discovery followed by a lab tour. (NPB 2205)
Week 6
Mon. July 1,
8:00am-9:15am		 REU Meeting: Physics is Fun show to high school students attending summer programs from UF's Center for Precollegiate and Training. (NPB 1002)

Week 7
Mon. July 8,
2:00-4:00 pm		 Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on scientific writing skills, led by Dr. Mickey Schafer, Coodinator: Writing in the Disciplines. (NPB 2205)
Important: Bring to this session a description (three or four well-organized paragraphs) of the purpose, plan, and scope of your REU research project. This description, which may eventually form the introduction to your end-of-project report, should be accessible to your non-expert peers. It should be prepared with a word processor (use whatever system you'll employ for preparing your final report) and printed double-spaced. Use of literature citations is optional.

3:00pm		 REU meeting: Prof. Yasu Takano will give a presentation on Quantum Magnetism and Low Temperature Research followed by a tour of the Microkelvin Laboratory. (NPB 2205)
Week 8
Mon. July 15,
2:00-4:00 pm		 Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on scientific writing skills (NPB 2205).
Fri. July 19,
2:40 pm		 REU Meeting: Prof. Tom Mareci will give a presentation on using NMR and MRI to probe the brain followed by a tour of the McKnight Brain Institute (MBI). Meet outside NPB 2205 to walk over to the MBI. His talk will be in LB-101A at the Brain Institute starting at 3pm.
Week 9
Mon. July 22,
6:00-8:00 pm		 Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on oral communication skills, led by Dr. Stephanie Webster, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication. We will provide pizza because of the late time. (NPB 2205)
Fri. July 26,
3:00 pm		 REU Meeting: Prof. Dominique Laroche will presentation on Topological Materials for Quantum Computation followed by a lab tour. (NPB 2205)
Fri. July 26,
3:00 pm		 Deadline for submitting the first version of your end-of-project report. This will be done electronically so there is no need to miss the regular REU meeting.
Week 10
Mon. July 29,
9:00-11:00 am		 Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on oral communication skills. (NPB 2205)
Important: During this session, you will be expected to deliver the introduction to your final presentation. More detailed instructions will be provided during the first session.
Wed. July 31,
1:00 pm		 Deadline for submitting final version of end-of-project report. Provide both the original in whatever word processor you are using and a pdf version.
Thur. Aug. 1,
9:00 am-4:00 pm		 Student presentations (NPB 2205) The times will be scheduled after the communications workshop on Monday. We will not need this entire time slot, and there will be times that the room is open for you to practice if you wish.
Fri. Aug. 2,
10:00 am-1:00 pm		 Last day of REU program: Check that final paper and talk are submitted, hand in keys, followed by exit interviews and lunch. Meet in NPB 2165.
Sat. Aug. 3,
noon		 Latest check-out time for Oakbrook Walk residences.
