Title & Speaker:
Mesoscale Science
Selected perspectives of (some) past, present, and future issues at the crossroads of physics, chemistry, molecular biology, and You!
Prof. Mark W. Meisel
Department of Physics and National High Magnetic Field Laboratory,
University of Florida
Abstract:
Following a period when nanoscale science has dominated our culture, from fundamental research to applications and from popular press to science fiction, the complexity of mesoscale science has recently reemerged as the focus of a wide range of initiatives, at least from the physics, chemistry, and materials science perspectives. On the other hand, molecular genetics has been wrapping itself around mesoscopic dynamics for a longer period of time.
The purpose of these lectures is not to provide a comprehensive historical evolution of various fields from microscopic knowledge to the edge of the mesoscopic precipice. Instead, the material covered is motivated by the experiences of the lecturer, who will describe his own fascination with various interdisciplinary topics. Some of the material will be directly focused toward enhancing the historical perspective of graduate students, while other topics will be provocative in terms of thinking and looking at standard problems with a new perspective.
