Due to an ambiguity in how the question was formulated in problem 5 of the last exam, we decided to give the full credit for this problem to all students regardless of their actual answers. Your Exam 2 scores on the e-learning web page have been updated. Thanks to the students who drew our attention to the ambiguity.

There is an opportunity to get a $7500 scholarship (for one year if you are a junior, for two years if you are a sophomore) called the 'Goldwater Scholarship' which supports future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Up to four can be awarded by the national selection committee to U of F students. Applications are at the Goldwater scholarship site, and should be completed by Dec. 1. For questions, contact Prof. Kevin Knudson, head of the honors program, at kknudson@honors.ufl.edu. For more details, http://www.act.org/goldwater/.

October 8

Today, the Nobel Prize in Physics was given to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs for their prediction of the Higgs boson, which was discovered last year at CERN by two experiments, ATLAS and CMS: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/.

UF has made major contribution to the design/construction/operation of the CMS experiment and led the Higgs boson search in this experiment; more on this in the UF news today: http://news.ufl.edu/2013/10/08/higgs-nobel/.

What is the Higgs boson, anyway? Check out this short clip: "Higgs boson made simple".

October 1

Today, students who have properly registered their HITT clickers should have received emails with their HITT quiz scores. If you have not received the email message, your HITT remote is not registered and the bonus points you think you collect will NOT be counted toward your final grade. The HITT roster will be closed for registration on the day of the last lecture.

Sept. 18

Yesterday (September 17) students who have properly registered their HITT clickers should have received emails with their HITT quiz scores. Below is the table with clicker IDs that have no association with students. The points collected by these clickers are not lost, but we have no means to know who they belong to. If you see there your clicker ID, your HITT remote is not registered at all or not registered properly. Go to the HITT registration web page and register your clicker. If you did it before, you probably made a mistake---register the clicker again: this time, make sure that there are no typos in the clicker ID number, your e-mail address, and the lecture period you attend.
