Final Grades

Final grades are now posted on canvas. Go to "grades" and you should see it in the top right corner. The grades are based on the Total Final Score. The grades shown are the grades you will be assigned in ISIS. The quiz total was put up yesterday, and it includes a small adjustment to some sections to ensure equity between the different sections. The exam 3 totals are also displayed. Mistakes (ours!) can still be corrected.

The scores on the final were mixed, with some excellent (7 perfect scores) and some not so good. You can see the answers under Exam Solutions on the left menu.

Some statistics on the course: Nine students achieved totals of over 100% (which is heartening to see even if it is mathematically disturbing). Congratulations to them! The median grade was a "B".

Have a good holiday season!

December 9th

Final Exam Coming Soon

I am happy to say that WileyPlus have delayed their maintenance to Saturday NIGHT (when we will ALL be sleeping).....

The final contributions from Homework (out of 5) and H-iTT (out of 5) are now available on Canvas. Please do not expect the final exam results to be there before Wednesday.

December 9th

Final Exam Coming Soon

We are sorry that there have been glitches recently with the WileyPlus connection, though luckily they have been shortlived. WileyPlus have announced routine maintenance during the night (starting 2 a.m. on the day of the exam). This is one more reason you should aim for a good night's rest before the final, rather than trying to work all night.....

Please note that it will be a cold night tonight, and the experience is that many rooms might still be cold at 7.30 a.m. Please dress appropriately!

December 6th

Final Exam Formulae

As usual you can see a preview of the formula sheets by going onto canvas -> quizzes and looking at the first Example Exam #3 (Spring 15). It has the sheets from the first 2 exams with a third one added.

November 27th

Final Exam Review

Prof. Yelton will do a review/help session on Tuesday, 12/6, at 7.10 p.m. (there is someone in the room beforehand, hence the odd time), in NPB 1001. Please come prepared with questions. In addition the Broward Teaching Center are putting on a review of our class material on Thursday at 6 p.m. in CSE E222.

November 27th

Final Exam Rooms
Here are the room assignments for the final - as usual by first letter of last name.
A-E NPB 1001 (where we have class)
F-H TUR L005 (Turlington)
I-P NRN 137 (Norman Hall)
Q-T TUR L007
U-Z TUR L011
Please remember it will still be dark when you make your way to the room. I apologize to those in Norman Hall, which is across 13th St from the main campus. Please set your alarms accordingly!

November 27th

Final Exam
This is a reminder that the final exam is on Saturday, 10th December at 7.30 a.m. Yes, that is IN THE MORNING! You can be assured that your professors did not choose this time - the registrar assigns it. The final will comprise 20 questions and will be the same format as your other two exams. It is two hours long (10 minutes longer than exams 1 and 2). There will be 12 questions on Chapters 13-17, and a further 8 questions based on previous work. The best way to review for the 8 questions is to look at the solutions for Exams 1 and 2 (see "Exam Solutions" on the menu on the left). The 8 questions on the final will be based upon these exams - the questions will not be identical, but will test the understanding of the same concepts.

November 27th

Make-Up Exam
We have contacted (by e-mail) those who have already been signed up for a make-up exam according to our policies (see "Grading Policy" on the menu on left). If you feel that you are entitled to take a make-up exam and did not receive an e-mail in the last few days, please send mail to phy2048@phys.ufl.edu detailing your situation.

November 22th

Homework 14
There is a NON GRADED Homework due Saturday, Nov. 26. This homework is on Chapter 15-Oscillations. There will be no quiz on this homework. One out of the 10 problems in this homework will be used on the final exam. Quiz 10 (Nov.28-30) will be on Homework 13 (Chapter 14-Fluids).

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 10th

Exam 2 scores posted
Exam 2 scores are posted. They INCLUDE an upwards revision because so many people misinterpreted a question or two. Overall, we were disappointed, though some people did very well, and after the upwards revision there were a dozen "20/20". Congratulations to all who obtained a high score!

Please look at the solutions (button on left). Remember that some of the topics that we feel are very important will reappear on the final (which is cumulative, but with the end chapters stressed).

Also in the gradebook at posted projected grades on quizzes (based on quizzes 2-7), homeworks (based on 2-11), H-iTT (based on all H-iTT points). There are still people who get 0 H-iTT points because they did not register their remotes. If they do not do so soon, they will not get ANY H-iTT points!

Although the projected grades have many good scores (with several still over 100%), I am sure there are some who are worried if they will get a "C" or not, and this is necessary to continue to the next semester. Again I stress looking at the solutions of the exams to work out what was not fully understood, and to look back at their lecture notes and see was missed. We really want everybody to perform well and the professors and teaching assistants are here to help!

November 7th

Exam 2, extra office hours
Sunil Thapa has volunteered to have extra office hours tomorrow (i.e. Tuesday), the day of the exam. It is from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. Sunil's office is NPB 2109.

November 7th

Exam 2
This is a reminder that the exam tomorrow (Tuesday, October 8th), starts at 8.20 p.m. and ends at 10.10 p.m. Please make sure you know where to go (room assignments below).

November 1st

Formula Sheet

This is a reminder that there will be a formula sheet supplied with the exam, and no further formula sheet is allowed. To get a preview of the formulae given, go into the canvas page, click on quizzes on the left, and look at the first Example Exam 2 (Spring 2015). It has the two-page formulae (the one for the first test and the new ones for the second test) and also a table of rotational inertia.

If you find any mistakes in these questions (or solutions) please do not hesitate to let us know. They are real exams from previous semesters that have been translated to canvas format so that you can practice. The solutions are made available after submitting.

October 28th

Room Asignments and Review

Exam 2 is on Tuesday, November 8th (election night). Here are the room assignments. We have divided the class according to the first letter(s) of your LAST name, thus:
A - L CAR 0100 (Carlton Auditorium)
M - R TUR L007 (Turlington)
S - Z NPB 1001 (Where our lectures are)

On Sunday, November 6th, Prof. Yelton will hold a review/help session, in NPB 1001, at 7 p.m. Please come ready with questions to ask or topic you would like reviewed.

October 12th

Office Hours

Prof. Yelton is now in Japan visiting his experiment (if you are interested in what it is, here is the homepage https://www.belle2.org/) He will not be in his office the remainder of this week and next. He will be back on October 21st.

October 12th

Office Hours

Please note that there is a Homework due this Saturday at 10 pm. In view of the upcoming Homecoming day, Sunil Thapa will offer his office hours this Thursday (Oct. 13) from 11:45-12:30 pm instead of his regular time on Friday.

October 6th

Hurricane Matthew

As you all know, there are no classes October 7th. We thus have to make some slight changes to the timetable. Homework Assignment 7 is still due on Saturday (October 8th). Questions 1-5 should be no problem for you. However, the material for questions 6-10 has not been fully covered in class. Therefore, we will grade all students as "correct" for Q6-10. We do encourage you to look at this material using the textbook and other resources and to do the questions anyway. The next quiz (Quiz 5, Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday 10-12 October) will be based on the material of questions 1-5. The following quiz (Quiz 6) may include the material in HW questions 6-10, along with the material covered in Homework Assignment 8.

We'll have to make some adjustments to the lecture schedule, but barring further problems, we will be on target to cover chapters 7-12 on exam 2 on 11/8 as originally planned. In the meantime, do lots of studying but stay safe as the storm passes through!

October 1st

Request for note-taker

We have been asked to find a note-taker for the class, for a student registered with the Disabilities Resource Center. There will be a some financial reward. If interested, please send a message to phy2048@phys.ufl.edu.

Exam 1 and Progress Report

Exam 1 Scores in Canvas

The exam 1 score (out of 20) is called "Exam 1 Score" in canvas. The average was close to 12 (the mode was also 12); there were some very good scores but rather more single-digit scores than we hoped for. To look at the exam, look at Exam Solutions on the left menu. There is the master exam (first answer is correct) and also a document of the solutions with some comments on the individual questions. Please read these carefully before asking for a personal investigation into your grade - scantrons don't make mistakes (all people do). Also in the gradebook are 4 projected grades (they are re-titled from the announcement below for better clarity). The projected HITT grade is the amount of extra credit (max 5) you are on course for. Likewise for homework (based on HWs 2-5), Quizzes (based on Q2-3), and exams (based on Exam 1). Note that there are huge fluctuations based on one poor performance, which will even out with time. Also if a score is missing (because a quiz will be made-up or has not made it to the gradebook) it will give zero contribution. Likewise HITT if the remote was not registered when we took the snapshot.

Note that these projections are not updated in real time. It's a lot of work to do and we will update every few weeks. For instance, if a remote is registered before the moment the scores are taken from the HITT system, the score on the next update will reflect the scores from the beginning (but not before then).

The last projection is the sum of the 4 components, and gives a number (in principle a percentage, but in fact because of the extra credit out of 105 - several people are above 100%). Looking at the grading scale on the syllabus gives the letter grade that this corresponds to.

To put these numbers in context, around 100 (out of around 600) students are on track for an A, and 30-40 more are on track for an A-. There are rather too many people with around 50%, but that can easily be cured with better quiz and exam scores and we fully expect that to happen.

HiTT and Homework Update

HiTT and Homework points in canvas

Periodically, we will update the canvas page with your HiTT and Homework cumulative scores. There are three HITT columns there in the gradebook. "HITT corrected" "Raw Points" and "Max Points". Max points is the maximum number of points available (right now this is 14 for the 10.40 class and 16 for 11.45 class). "Raw points" is how many you have (1 for an incorrect answer, 2 for a correct one). "HiTT corrected" takes these numbers and calculates the total extra credit (out of 5) that you will get if you continue with your present success rate. It takes into account the "forgiveness" factor, so many people have the maximum 5 (you are not allowed more than 5). The points are valid as of Thursday (9-22). If you got zero, the chances are you have not yet registered your clicker with the class. Do so! If you register now, your score will be updated the next time we do an upload.

For the homework, there are 2 columns. One is HW points which is taken directly from WileyPlus (as of now, it is out of 40 as there are 4 homeworks that count, as HW1 does not count. The HW grade is the amount after "forgiveness" that contributes to your final grade if you continue at the same success rate as now. All these are designed to make sure that you know what grade you are on track for. These will also be uploaded periodically.

September 21st

Review for Exam 1

There will be a review for Exam 1 at 7 p.m. on Sunday, 25th September in room NPB 1001. Prof. Yelton will be there to do a lightning review of key points and to answer questions. It works best if you come with specific topics for which you feel your understanding is lacking, and he will concentrate on those.

September 15th

Exam 1 Rooms

Unfortunately, our first exam (MONDAY EVENING 26th September at 8.20 p.m.) is spread out all over central campus in seven different rooms. We have divided the class according to the first letter(s) of your LAST name, thus:

Once you submit, you will get the solutions.
  • Scratch paper will be provided
  • Calculators are allowed (should have sin and cos, graphing calculators are OK, but not cell-phone calculators!)
