Final Grades
The final grades are now on canvas. You will see the "Exam 3" column (out of 20, the average was between 11 and 12), "Exams Final Total" (out of 75), "Total Final Score" (out of 100 + 5.5 extra credit), and also, the grade that is being assigned to you (for instance, it might say "Total:99.8% (A)". Please note that some students have a "-" for the final exam. If you believe this is in error, please let us know. Mistakes (ours, not yours) can still be corrected. Some statistics. High Score 104.25. Five students scored more than 100%. Approx 100 students got an "A". We do hope you enjoyed the class, and will take a refreshing break over the holiday season! |

It is recommended that you find your location in plenty of time. The format is the same as the other exams, except you have 120 minutes instead of 110. As usual, the rooms are assigned by the first letter of your last name. |

H-iTT
The final totals of H-iTT are now in the gradebook. There are a maximum of 68 points, and after being put in the formula, the final H-iTT contribution to the grade is shown (max 5). There are some people who have ZERO which usually means that their clicker has not been registered (or they have never attended class....) If the former is true, I think they should contact us immediately to see what to do. |

Review for Final
Prof. Yelton will give a review for the final. It will be in the usual lecture room, on Thursday 7th December at 1.55 p.m. This is during "reading days". Please come with an idea of topics and questions that you would like him to cover as it clearly not possible to cover everything. |

Exam 2 Make-Up
The make-up exam for those who missed Exam 2 for an allowable reason, is given on Wednesday 15th November at 8.20 p.m. in the physics building (room 1101, the center room in the main lobby area). It will have the same format as our other exams. |

Projected Scores
The projected scores in the gradebook were updated after the second exam. They include all the homework and quizzes up to that time, and the H-iTT up till Monday before the exam. If you have "0" for the H-iTT it means that you have not registered (or have not attended class!). Please rectify this now! To be clear, the "total projected" is the present estimate, based upon your trajectory so far, of the points score which will be converted to a letter grade at the end of the semester. The guaranteed grading scale is shown on the syllabus. |

Exam 2
Exam 2 scores are now available. Overall, although there were some good scores, we were disappointed. There was one problem - number 2 on the master - that had some words missing. Therefore everyone was marked "correct" for that question. In addition, because of several questions that proved harder than expected, we added 2 points to everyone's score. The score you see in the gradebook has ALREADY had these adjustments. We encourage everyone to look at the solutions. Please remember that the final is partly cumulative, and there is a chance that problems will be recycled from this test. We are always ready to help in office hours. Congratulations to those who did well! |

Make-Up for Exam 2
As you all know, Exam 2 is on Tuesday November 7th. There are some students for whom this date conflicts with a higher-numbered course. We will have a make-up exam covering the same material at 8.20 p.m. Wednesday November 15th in NPB room 1101. If you have this, or another allowable reason, to take this make-up, please send a message to PHY2048@phys.ufl.edu telling us of the conflict, and we will confirm that we expect you. Some students have already done this, and so are already on our list. If this make-up time is also not possible for you, please let us know and we will deal with it on a case-by-case basis. |

Grades update
The gradebook now shows a series of new columns. These are projected grades from H-iTT (see below), Quizzes (based on quizzes 3-5), homework (based on HWs 2-8 except for 5), HW5 extra credit, and exams (based on 1 exam). They are totaled to give a total projected score, the highest possible is 105.5 (and in fact some students have 105.5!). You can then look at that score and see what grade it corresponds to (see "grading policy"). The "forgiveness" factors have been included in all of the subtotals. Some warnings. This entry is not "live". It is only updated when we run the formulae over the grades, and we cannot do that in canvas itself so we have to upload these numbers. It will be updated again some time after the second exam. If you find any mistakes in your grades we will change them (but it does not automatically update this column). The projected grades look similar to our expectations at this time. We would be happier if there were fewer people below the 55 score needed for a C. The higher scores we get in the exams, the happier we are! |

H-iTT Update
The gradebook now shows an updated H-iTT score. It is now up-to-date including Monday 10/16. The maximum number is 30 (15 questions). This has now been translated in the total (out of 5) points extra credit that you are on track for. That is, if you continue to get as many questions correct as you are doing at the moment, this will be the contribution to final grade total. The last roster update was Friday 10/13. If you have "0" it is probably because you did not register you clicker by that time. |

Make-up Exam 1
The make up for Exam 1 will take place on Wednesday, October 11, at 8:20 pm until 10:10 pm in room NPB 1101 in the Physics Department. Students that are scheduled to take it are encouraged to come 15 min earlier. |

Exam 1 Grades
Exam 1 is graded and the grades are posted on E-Learning (Canvas). A great number of students did very well on the exam with the everage being 13.2 although the peak of the distribution is at 15. Let's keep up the good work and do even beter on the next exam! |

Office Hours and Extra Help
As announced in class, Prof. Yelton is at a conference. His office hours on Thursday (28th) will be taken by Sunil Thapa (room 2109). Also as announced in class, Mr. Charles Parks, who helps run the undergraduate labs, has made himself available 6.15-8.15 p.m. every Thursday in room NPB 1001 to work problems and answer questions on the introductory courses. Mr. Parks knows our course very well and has a lot of experience in teaching all the introductory courses. |

First H-iTT results have been uploaded to the gradebook. You will see two columns - one with your score, and one with the maximum possible points (12 so far). These will be updated every few weeks. If you see "0" (but have been clicking), it implies that you have not yet registered your clicker (see instructions on button on left). The roster was updated on 9-20, if you registered since then it will still say "0". |

Homework Update
Homework 4 is due on Saturday as usual. Having set the deadlines back for the other homeworks, we do not have another Saturday before the exam for homework 5 to be due. Therefore it is due by Tuesday 10 p.m. All the necessary material will be covered in class by then. Because of the inconvenience caused, we are grading HW 5 as "extra credit". |

Exam 1 Conflicts
We thought that the first exam was free of exam conflicts, but unfortunately some other courses now have exams that have been rearranged by Irma and are on the same evening as ours. If the other exam is also an "assembly" exam (more than 300 students) and has a course number greater than ours (i.e. greater than 2048), it is our duty to offer a make-up exam (if it is not an assembly exam or is a lower number, it is the duty of the other course instructors). Our make-up exam will be an equivalent exam, on the same material, and will be given Wednesday 11th October at 8.20 p.m., in room NPB 1101. If you need to take this make-up, send a message to phy2048@phys.ufl.edu, telling us of the conflict. We will put you on a list and expect you at that time. If this time/date is also not possible, let us know the reason why it is not possible and we will try to arrange something on a student-by-student basis. |

Post Hurricane News
Class will meet this Friday, and we will continue where we left off. For this one (and only one) class, there will be no H-iTT, in case people left town and have not arrived back. If you do miss class, be sure to look at the online videos and read the textbook. Sadly, you will find the magnificent oak tree outside the New Physics Building split and fell over the weekend. The tree pre-dated not just UF, but the City of Gainesville. Our building was designed and situated carefully to allow it to co-exist with the physicists, but the storm was too much for it. Please be careful when entering the building on Friday. It is hoped that the main walkway will be clear by then. As you know, the Homework 3 deadline is this Saturday. The Homework 4 deadline will be extended until we have covered the necessary sections of the course in lectures. We plan to compress the material a little in the next few weeks - but the exam 1 date and material will remain unchanged (we always factored in the possibility of being a little behind the published schedule - we missed two class days last year because of hurricane scares!) The quizzes next week (i.e. starting 18th September), will be on Homework 3 material. Quiz 2 was effectively canceled. |

Hurricane Update
As you know, the University is closed on Monday. At the present, here are the arrangements for PHY2048. Class as usual Friday (September 8th). Students who have left before then are encouraged to look at the powerpoint (which will be posted), the online videos, the textbook etc. There will be no quizzes in discussions next week. The discussions will meet if UF is open on Tuesday and Wednesday. The homework deadline (presently due Saturday 9th) will be extended for one more week. This is as a courtesy to those students who may be traveling on Saturday. However, we encourage people to do it according to the normal schedule while we all have power. We wish you all a safe weekend and start to next week |

First Class
For those who missed the first lecture, the main lesson is to "Read the Syllabus"... everything should be there. We seem to have an odd presentation detail in the Homework (Chapter 1, Question 9, the second question of HW1). It say 2.00103, rather than 2.00 x 103. I don't know how this one question can be affected, or if it is so on all browsers. We will contact Wiley about it. As stated in class today, discussions do meet the first week. |
