PHY 2048 - Physics 1 with Calculus - Spring 2014

Wiley Plus

(Assignments listed below text)

The homework problems in the WileyPlus system are due weekly on Saturday at 10PM. No exceptions allowed. Since the WileyPlus server might have problems occasionally, be sure to start the assignments early and turn in answers steadily, rather than all on the last day. Answers can be entered individually and saved by the system so whatever you have entered before the due date counts.

The due dates for specific chapters are indicated on the schedule page, and the problems are listed below. Most answers are numerical, and need to be within a certain tolerance (2%) of the correct answer so keep a sufficient number of significant digits. You get instant feedback as to whether the answer is correct or not. You will usually have up to 5 attempts to get the correct answer.

After the homework assignment is due, the homework solutions will be placed on the Sakai E-Learning web site for this course. This will give you plenty of time to study the solutions prior to your quiz on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

The URL for accessing the homework for this course is:

http://edugen.wileyplus.com/edugen/class/cls370145/

But you must first carefully follow the registration instructions listed here

Advice:

Homework is a rewarding activity for those who work at it. We encourage students to talk to one another about the problems, but you must enter the answers yourself. It is extremely important to work out how an answer was obtained, because that is the key for doing well on the quizzes and exams.

The assigned problems on WileyPlus are (mostly) taken from the end of chapter problems in the textbook (the corresponding textbook problems are given below). If you have the hardcopy textbook you don't need to be on-line to make progress on the homework. The best practice is to keep a homework notebook where you work out the problems symbolically to arrive at an expression. Once you have that expression enter the textbook parameters to see if the answer is reasonable (numerically and in terms of the units). When you are satisfied, get onto WileyPlus, use the new parameters given for the problem there and input the answer. You will be told immediately if your answer was correct, or not, and typically get 5 tries to get it right.
