13-Dec-2006

Final exam solution is posted on the solutions page. The average was 14.4/20, including the extra point. Because this score is so high, we will not be making any adjustments to the letter grade boundaries. Grades are not rounded, unless a score falls within 0.01. Because of the size of the class, there will always be people close to grade boundaries, but it cannot be helped.

Quiz grades: We are working on uploading the quiz grades later today. We are still lacking grades for 4 students who took the final. Again note that many quiz scores were shifted down because of higher than normal class averages (discussed below). This is part of our policy ensuring fairness across all the TAs, so please don't ask us to violate it.

Update: Quiz grades are now uploaded. We are still investigating 1-2 students who switched sections, but the grades are otherwise final..

12-Dec-2006

Final exam scores uploaded: Note that we decided to give everyone credit for the problem involving the two beams going through different materials because it was done incorrectly in WebAssign. The score includes the extra point. If your exam score was not uploaded it is because you bubbled in the wrong UFID. We keep the scores in a master list where we look at name and UFID, so we have correct information on everyone. The uploaded info is only a copy.

Quiz scores have not been uploaded yet because we are trying to find the scores of some students who transferred between sections. The sections of Petkova (non-honors), Seo and Pazerowski had quiz scores downgraded because the averages were higher than the other sections. This procedure follows what we said at the beginning of the semester and ensures fairness across the entire class.

9-Dec-2006

SECOND NOTICE on Final exam room locations: The final exam is Monday, December 11 from 10:00AM - 12:00 PM. Students are assigned to the following rooms by the first first few letters of your last name (family name). Make sure you come to the proper room because space is limited.

  • MCA G186: S - Z

CLB = Chemistry Lab Bldg.
TUR = Turlington
MCA = McCarty A

8-Dec-2006

WebAssign scores uploaded (UPDATE): The WebAssign scores were uploaded at 7:00PM Friday. There were a maximum of 226 points for 16 assignments, which is 14.125 points per assignment. We dropped another point to correct for one question in Chapter 22 that involved a drawing. To make a score between 0 and 20, your WebAssign score was computed by multiplying your total WebAssign points by 20 / (226 - 14.125 - 1). Scores >20 were capped at 20. Please do not send email asking for a further explanation of this procedure. (Prof. Avery just fixed a bug in his original calculation. Your current grades should be correct now.)

Quiz grades not uploaded yet: We are still computing the quiz grades on account of complications involving students that switched sections. We hope to have this done Saturday.

Second review cancelled: Unfortunately, Jeff was not able to set this up with the Registrar before the weekend. However, we were pleased at the turnout for the Friday review in which Prof. Avery covered the major topics in chapters 34-36.

CHANGE IN FRIDAY EXAM REVIEW TIME: Prof. Avery's review had to be changed to 1:30 - 3:00 in the class room.

1-Dec-2006

Final exam reviews: We will do two reviews: (1) Friday, Dec. 8 from 1:30 - 3:00 will be led by Prof. Avery, (2) Jeff Crutchfield will also conduct one, and the time and place will be announced here.

Final exam: This will be 20 questions, 10 covering Chap. 34-36 and 10 covering the previous chapters. The questions covering the earlier material will come solely from WebAssign, homework and exam questions from the previous three exams. You are allowed two formula sheets (typed or handwritten) this time.

21-Nov-2006 Exam 3 solutions are now posted on the solutions page.

20-Nov-2006

Exam 3 scores have been posted on WebAssign. To see your exam score, just log into WebAssign, click on My Assignments, then All Assignments and find the score for Exam 3. Students with scores of -999 have incorrect exam codes on their ScanTron. They will have to find their question sheet and come to Dr. Avery's office to look for their ScanTron in the pile of 500 in order to correct their scores.

We will try to post the solutions on Tuesday.

15-Nov-2006

Office hour change: Prof. Avery managed to change his plans and will be back Wednesday night and will have his usual office hours on Thursday.

Exam 3 review: Jeff Crutchfield will conduct the review, which will take place 6 - 8 PM, Thursday Nov. 16 at MCCA (McCarty Hall A), room G186.

12-Nov-2006 Prof. Avery office hours: Prof. Avery has to be in Tampa this week till Thursday afternoon. He will move his office hours to Friday, 9:45 - 12:00 PM. He will also be around from 2:00 - 4:00 PM that day as well.

3-Nov-2006

Animations and pictures: There are some interesting sites on the earth's magnetic field reversals. NOVA has a nice web site with several links, including an animation of the earth's magnetic field reversal, pictures of auroras, effects of reversals on animals which use geolocation.

This site has a long article about the earth's field and links to longer articles, including one from Physics Web.

Another site has animations, including continental drift and the formation of sea floor and the evidence it contains about reversals.

Finally, the Pittsburgh Supercomter Center (PSC) has a magnetic field reversal discussion about the computations that went into the NOVA simulation and the science behind it.

1-Nov-2006 Prof. Avery office hours: Prof. Avery was asked to teach 2061 for a colleague at 4th period on Thursday, losing the 10:40 part of of his office hours. He will therefore have an office hour from 9:30 -10:30Friday.

25-Oct-2006 Incorrect exam codes: The following students need to come to us to correct the exam codes on their ScanTron: D. Thedja, B.W. Barnes.

19-Oct-2006 Review books: We have identified several review books that you might find useful for supplementary reading and problems. These are described on the reference page on the menu. Prof. Avery has samples in his office. We recommend that you look at these books for extra help.

18-Oct-2006

Exam 2 scores have been posted on WebAssign. To see your exam score, just log into WebAssign, click on My Assignments, then All Assignments and find the score for Exam 2. Students with scores of -999 have incorrect exam codes on their ScanTron. They will have to find their question sheet and come to Dr. Avery's office to look for their ScanTron in the pile of 500 in order to correct their scores. 0.5 points were deducted from several exams for not having information bubbled in.

Exam 2 solutions will be posted in a day or so. We are trying to create the histogram but having some trouble with Excel.

17-Oct-2006 GatorOne ID for exam 2: You must bring your GatorOne ID card for inspection at the exam.

16-Oct-2006

Exam 2 review: Jeff Crutchfield will host the review Tuesday, Oct 17 from 6:00 - 8:00pm in TUR L005. Note time and location!

Additional office hours: Prof. Avery will have extra office hours Tuesday, 9:30-12:00 and 3:30-5:00. He will also be around Wednesday morning 9:30 - 12:00.

13-Oct-2006 Additional lecture notes for Chapters 28 and 29 are posted on the schedule page.

2-Oct-2006 Chapter 27 notes have been reposted to fix a couple of problems on slides 19 and 26.

27-Sep-2006 Chapter 26 WebAssign: We have noticed a bug in Problem 3 and have corrected it. The 61 students who have already completed the assignment for Chapter 26 as of 2:36 PM will receive full credit for this problem. If you have started the assignment but have not completed it, make sure to redo Problem 3. This bug did not affect those who have not yet started the Chapter 26 assignment.

26-Sep-2006

Exam 1 solutions and the historgram of scores are posted on the solutions page. This also shows where the exam problems came from. Note that 6 problems came from the textbook, 4 from webassign, 1 from an assigned chapter problem and 1 from a sample problem. The average was a dismal 4.2/10, in spite of the fact that most of the questions came from the homework. We have decided to grant a reprieve for the first exam and add 1 point (the modified score is the one you see in WebAssign).

Exam 1 scores: We have posted these on WebAssign. To see your exam score, just log into WebAssign, click on My Assignments, then All Assignments and find the score for Exam 1. Students with scores of -998 have incorrect exam codes on their ScanTron. They will have to find their question sheet and come to Dr. Takano's office to look for their ScanTron in the pile of 500 in order to correct their scores.

Proper ID: You must have a valid GatorOne card with you when you take exams. The following students need to see us before we post their scores: Andrea Booher, Walker Turner, Nahu Aluha, Andrew Bauer, Tait Pollard, Arnold Smith, Kevin Shoemaker, Eliza Chiang.

20-Sep-2006 Prof. Avery's office hours Since he has to be out of town Thursday, Prof. Avery will have his office hours Friday 11:00 - 12:45.

18-Sep-2006 Exam review: Jeff Crutchfield, the person who conducts the Supplemental Instruction, will hold a review for exam 1 on Thursday from 6:00-8:00PM in room 1001 (2049 lecture room).

11-Sep-2006

Webassign reminder: As noted on the WebAssign page, do not wait till the last minute to submit all your answers. The WebAssign server is mostly reliable, but not 100%, so you should work on the problems steadily and enter them individually. We allow at least two weeks access to the problems which gives you plenty of time to solve them.

Email reminder: All email should be sent to both Dr. Avery and Dr. Takana in case one of us is traveling or otherwise not able to respond in a timely way.

2-Sep-2006

Chapter 22 WebAssign: We are aware of the Chap. 22 problem requiring a figure to be drawn and have asked WebAssign for a fix to change the number of points for the assignment so that no one is penalized. It will be fixed.

Chapter 22 WebAssign is now due Monday, Sep. 4. The dates were listed inconsistently, so we moved the due date to the later time.

Goo Goo Dolls rock: Prof. Avery and his daughter enjoyed the concert, which was at the fairgrounds on Rte. 301 near Tampa. She's been wanting to see them since 2004. We weren't able to stay for the Counting Crow's concert, which followed immediately after. This is a great outdoor venue for concerts.

30-Aug-2006

Problem in homework 21.15: Parts (c) and (d) of this problem are stated incorrectly. The charge of the third charge should be chosen to make charges 1 and 2 be in equilibrium.

Supplemental Instruction: We have a new Supplemental Instruction service provided by our friends at the Teaching Center. Study groups lead by a student with expertise in physics are provided three periods per week to accommodate students' crowded schedules. We urge those of you wanting a little extra help to visit the web page and try out the service once a week. See the web site for times and location.

26-Aug-2006

WebAssign registration is ready!: We have uploaded all 485 students to WebAssign. You can now register in WebAssign using the directions on the course registration page. Remember that your username is your 8-digit UFID, including leading zeroes but no hyphen! Do not use your WebAssign login from previous semesters and do not use your GatorLink name.

Note that the first assignment is now due Wednesday, August 30.

23-Aug-2006 WebAssign registration: Please do not register for WebAssign until we announce it on this page. We have to upload the roster before you register (probably late Thursday). The extra time is needed because students are still adding PHY2049 to their schedule and we have to wait till that process stabilizes.

23-Aug-2006

Welcome to PHY2049! This is a new web site, so material is still being added in several places. We welcome comments and suggestions for making this course web site a unique resource for students. In particular, we would appreciate links to online material (explanations, problems and solutions, interesting applications, applets) that could enhance learning.

Discussion sections begin Thursday, Aug. 24
