Also, you will see on canvas your final QUIZ scores, HWxQuiz scores, and HITT scores; these three scores already include forgiveness factors specified in the syllabus. B+ (70), B (65), B- (60),
C+ (55), C (50), C- (45),
D+ (40), D (35), D- (30)

February 23

The homework due date has been further extended to Friday, February 26, 10:00 pm, to ensure that all students who were affected by WileyPLUS' service nterruptions last night will have time to complete the homework.

February 22

HW 6 will not be due until tomorrow, February 23, 10:00 pm. The due date has been moved because the WileyPLUS website is experiencing problems.

February 20

WileyPLUS' solution to HW5 Problem 50 contains an error, although the final answer is correct. In the example shown below (click the image to enlarge), the factor "0.268" that appears in the last two lines should be "0.389". We have requested WileyPLUS to correct the error.

February 18

Exam 1 scores are on e-Learning.
The exam solutions are posted as well (see left side menu). PLEASE take time to review and make sure you understand these solutions. If you missed some of the problems, it would be prudent to review again the chapters these problems correspond to.

February 16

Exam 1 master copy, with the first answer always being the correct one, is posted. Problem 11 answers here are as intended [we gave all students one point on this problem]. Solution are coming shortly. The exam 1 grades will be available in a few days.

February 15

An HITT remote was found in the lecture hall today. If you have left it there, send an email to phy2049@phys.ufl.edu.

February 12

Exam 1 review will be held today in the usual auditorium from 6:15 pm - 8:10 pm, as was announced earlier. In the excitement of the discovery of gravitational waves, we have accidentally deleted our original announcement of the review. Our apologies!

February 11

BIG BIG NEWS!!!
And UF physicists were directly involved in the discovery!
And even more: Later in the class, we will learn about Michelson interferometers -- so you will know exactly how the discovery was made!

February 9

WileyPLUS' solution to HW3, Problem 51 contains a typographical error. In the example shown below (click the image to enlarge), "16.0 m" and "5.34 m" that appear in the denominators in the first line of the equation should be "0.16 m" and "0.053 m". We have requested WileyPLUS to correct the typo.

February 9

Exam 1, covering Ch. 21 - Ch. 26, will be held as scheduled on Monday, February 15, from 8:20 pm - 10:10 pm. (Note there was a typo in the announcement slide shown in class yesterday. The area of the exam is through Ch. 26, not through Ch. 25 as was said in the slide.) You are assigned to the rooms listed below, according to the first two letters of your last name (family name).
  • A - Ci: Turlington L011
  • Cl - Dh: Larsen 310
  • Di - He: Little 101
  • Hi - Le: Turlington L005
  • Li - Pa: Little 109
  • Pe - Si: Weil 270
  • Sk - Z: McCarty A G186
For security reasons, you must come to the room to which you are assigned.

January 29

WileyPLUS' solution to HW2, Problem 26 contains a typographical error. The error appears on the right hand side of the second equation given in the solution. In the example shown below (click the image to enlarge), "-3600" in the equation should be "-2400". We have asked WileyPLUS to correct the typo.

January 29

Today you should have received an email with a summary your HITT scores.
If you have not received such an email, you:
  • either have not registered your HITT remote control (see instructions under "Register: HITT" on the left)
  • or provided in your registration an incorrect email address
  • or your incoming email box is full.
If any of the above problems applies to you, please fix it ASAP!
This is our LAST REMINDER.

January 28

The plot below shows the HW2 statistics. The main concern here is that we see that 10-15% of students have not even attempted to do the assignment. If you are among this cohort, you must change drastically your attitude to the course or withdraw now. Not doing one or the other implies a failing grade at the end of the course----PLEASE wake up!

January 28

The date and time for the make-up exam is set: Thursday, April 21, 12:00 pm.
The location will be announced a few days before the exam.
Reminder:
  • you must provide adequate documentation for the reasons for missing an exam and get an explicit permission (email from phy2049@phys.ufl.edu) to make it up;
  • you can make up one and only one exam;
  • the make-up exam is cumulative, regardless of which exam you have actually missed;

January 13

Today you should have received an email with your HITT score from today's lecture.
If you have not received such an email, you:
  • either have not registered your HITT remote control (see instructions under "Register: HITT" on the left)
  • or provided in your registration an incorrect email address
  • or your incoming email box is full.
If you did receive the HITT message, but it says that you have not attended the lecture and earned zero, while you did come to the lecture, you:
  • either have not registered your HITT remote control ID correctly,
  • or registered your remote for the period that you do not attend
  • or have not programmed your remote to operate in NPB 1001.
If any of the above problems applies to you, please fix it ASAP.

January 6

Welcome to PHY2049! Studying physics is rewarding and we hope you will enjoy the course.

This opening web page will have all current announcements---please make sure to bookmark it. Check this page periodically, especially if you happen to miss a lecture. The collection of the links in the left bar constitutes the syllabus for the course.

Here are a few upcoming important events and deadlines:
  • HOMEWORK: The first homework assignment is due on Monday, January 11, 10:00 PM. It is meant to familiarize you with the WileyPlus system and will not be counted toward your final grade. To access the WileyPlus system click the "Register: WileyPlus" link in the menu and follow instructions there. The first graded homework is due on Monday, January 18, 10:00 PM.

  • Register your HITT remote: During lectures of January 8 and January 11, we will conduct trial HITT quizzes. Make sure to buy and register (!!!) your HITT clicker by that time. Beginning January 13, HITT quizzes will start bringing you bonus points.

  • Discussion sessions and QUIZZES: Discussion sessions will start this week (some of you will have a class today). Next week, you will be given a trial quiz at the end of your discussion session; it will not be counted toward your final grade. Beginning January 20, discussion session quizzes will start counting toward your final grade.
