Announcements

April 29

Exam scores, final-exam answer key: Your scores for the final exam and makeup exam, if you have taken one, have been uploaded to Canvas. The makeup exam score appears under the exam you have missed. The answer key for the final exam is in Canvas, in the "Exam Solutions" file folder. We are planning on submitting final grades to the Registrar this evening.

April 22

Missed the Exam? If you could not come to the final exam for an unexpected, legitimate reason, please immediately send an email to phy2049 AT phys.ufl.edu, explaining your situation and attaching a supporting document. In your email, please also list all possible times at which you will be able to take a make-up exam on Thursday, April 27, or Friday, April 28.

April 20

WileyPLUS service interruption: WileyPLUS has announced a scheduled service interruption that will last from 1 AM to 7 AM Saturday, April 22. We have requested Wiley to postpone it, but we strongly advise you the following before the interruption, if you think you may need to look at homework problems or solutions, or the online book on Saturday after 1 AM before the exam. (1) Download any homework file by clicking the homework in WileyPLUS, scrolling to the bottom, then clicking the blue link labeled "print a blank copy" under "Print Assignment". (2) Take a screenshot of any solution by opening the homework problem, then clicking the button labeled "Show Solution" near the bottom. (3) Take advantage of the offer from Wiley and get a free copy of the textbook as an ebook, which you can keep. For details, go to "Announcements" in Canvas and read the announcement dated February 14.

April 18

Instructor evaluations: Please evaluate the instructors and your TA at https://evaluations.ufl.edu. Your feedback is very important to us.

Final exam problems: As has been announced on the Course Schedule webpage, half of the 20 problems in the final exam will be on the new material, corresponding to Chapter 31, Section 4 through Chapter 36 of the book. Among the other half, about 4 problems from Exams 1 and 2 will reappear with some changes -- we mean about 4 in total, not about 4 from each Exam.

In addition to those we listed before Exam 1, the following sections of the book will not be covered by the exam.
  • Sections 32-4 through 32-9.
  • Sections 36-2, 36-4, 36-6, and 36-7.

April 17

Final exam rooms: The final exam will be on Saturday, April 22, 7:30 - 9:30 am. (In the morning, not in the evening!) The room to take your exam depends on the first letter of your last name (family name).
  • A - C: Pugh 170
  • D - H: McCarty C 100
  • I - O: Norman 137
  • P - Z: New Physics Bldg. 1001 (your usual lecture room)
For security reasons, you must come to the room to which you are assigned, or you could receive a zero for the exam.

Material you must bring, and you are allowed to bring, is listed on the "Exam and Quiz Policy" page accessible from the menu bar on the left.

April 15

Prof. Mueller's Office hours, Monday: Prof. Mueller will not be able to hold office hours Monday, April 17. If you would like to see him before the final exam, please send an email to phy2049 AT phys.ufl.edu. He will try to arrange a time on Friday, April 21.

April 14

Final exam review: Thursday, April 20, 6:15 pm - 8:10 pm, NPB 1002, the smaller lecture hall right next to Rm. 1001. The review will follow the same format as the last two. Bring your questions and a list of problems you would like to be discussed; they can be from any source, including past exams, the textbook, and HITT quizzes.

Recommended problems from Chapter 36: three problems at the end of the chapter are highly recommended--Problems 9, 29, and 44.

April 12

Make-up Exam: An email about the make-up exam has been sent to those students who had an excused absence for one of the three exams. If you have been approved by the instructors to take the make-up exam but have not received the email in the last two days, please contact phy2049 AT phys.ufl.edu. If you think you are entitled to take the make-up exam although you have not received an email, please also contact phy2049 AT phys.ufl.edu explaining your situation.

April 4

HITT scores: The second summary of your HITT scores was emailed to you this morning. If you have received no email, you have not correctly registered your remote and you must re-register your remote. If you have received an email but the scores are all or mostly zero, although you have taken many HITT quizzes, then it means you have registered your remote for a wrong period. In that case, please re-register your remote for the period you have been attending.

March 29

Exam scores and a grade-prediction spreadsheet are posted in Canvas. The spreadsheet allows you to predict your final grade under different scenarios: a simple extrapolation, best case, worst case, etc. To download it, click on "Files" in the Canvas menu, and look for the Excel file entitled "PHY2049GradePredictor_S2017.xlsx".

March 27

Solutions to Exam 2 problems are posted in Canvas. Click on "Files" in the menu, then open the Exam Solutions folder. Exam scores will be uploaded shortly to Canvas.

March 22

Typos in lecture slides: Two errors have been found by a student in two slides for Chapter 27. In 2017.02.10_Ch27_L2.pdf, a wrong answer was marked on the third slide, entitled 'QUIZ', for a HITT quiz. The correct answer is R=r. In 2017.02.10_Ch27_L3.pdf, the loop-rule equation for the second loop was the same as that for the first loop and was wrong. Both typos have been corrected in the revised slide files posted in Canvas.

March 20

Exam 2 areas: The exam covers all sections of the text book from Chapter 27 up to Section 31.3 of the 10th edition. Note: in the 9th edition, this is up to Section 31.8.

March 16

Review for Exam 2 will be given on Monday, March 20, 6:15 pm - 8:10 pm, in Florida Gym room 210. The review will be similar in format to the last one for Exam 1. Come to the review with questions and a list of problems you would like to be discussed; they can be from any source, including past exams, the textbook, HITT quizzes.

March 16

Exam 2 locations: The exam will be on Friday, March 24, 8:20 - 10:10 pm. Your room depends on the first letter of your last name (family name).
  • A - E: Chemistry Laboratory Bldg. 130
  • F - L: Norman 137
  • M - R: Weimer 1064
  • S - Z: Computer Science and Engineering Bldg. A101
For security reasons, you must come to the room to which you are assigned.

Material you must bring, and you are allowed to bring, is listed on the "Exam and Quiz Policy" page accessible from the menu bar on the left.

March 10

Office hours update: Prof. Takano will not be available for office hours on Wednesday, March 15. Instead, he will have his office hours on Thursday, March 16, periods 6 and 7 (12:50 pm - 2:45 pm).

March 2

HITT scores were emailed to you this afternoon. If you have received no email, it means you have not correctly registered your remote. Please re-register your remote in that case. If you have received an email but the scores are all or mostly zero, although you have taken many HITT quizzes, then it means you have registered your remote for a wrong period. In that case, please re-register your remote for the period you have been attending.

February 28

Homework 7 deadline has been extended by 24 hours, because Canvas was experiencing service disruption this afternoon until about 4:30 pm. The service is now back. We encourage you to be prudent and complete your homework by tomorrow noon at the latest, since Canvas may go down again.

February 21

WileyPLUS problem 27-50: You may have found the solution given by WileyPLUS to this problem-- a Homework 5 problem--difficult to follow. If so, the alternative solutions posted in Canvas may help you. In Canvas, look for a pdf file entitled WileyPLUS27-050solution.pdf.

February 17

Grading Policy typos: As some of you have pointed out to us, there were typographical errors on the Grading Policy page. 12 discussion-section quizzes are planned for this course, instead of 10 as was written on the page. Correspondingly, 12, instead of 10, should appear in two places in the formula for the Final Quiz Score, further down the page. These errors have now been corrected.

February 16

Exam scores and solutions are posted in Canvas. To see the solutions, go to Files, then to the folder entitled Exam Solutions.

February 15

Errors in posted slides: The slide file 2017.02.13_Ch27_L3.pdf, posted right after the lecture on February 13, contained errors. The answer was marked incorrectly to the last clicker question about RC circtuits, and the solution on the next slide did not match the question. These errors have been corrected.

February 15

The answer key to Exam l is posted in Canvas. Go to Files, then to the folder entitled Exam Solutions.

February 12

Clicker questions asked in the lectures for Chapters 23 and 24 have been posted as a single file in Canvas.

February 10

Exam 1 areas: All sections of the book in Chapters 21 - 26 will be the areas of Exam 1, with the following exceptions. (They refer to the 10th edition and online book, not to earlier editions.)
  • Section 21-3: Sufficient to read the very first paragraph.
  • Sections 25-5 and 25-6: It was said in class that these sections are your responsibility, and we have advised students who have asked that these sections are part of the exam areas. But we have decided not to include these sections in the exam.
  • Section 26-3: Skip the part entitled "Variation with Temperature" but do not skip Sample Problem 26.04, which appears after it.
  • Section 26-4: Ignore Eqs. 26-19 through 26-23.
  • Section 26-5: Skip the parts entitled "Semiconductors" and "Superconductors".

February 8

WileyPLUS service was interrupted last night, when HW4 was due. Unfortunately, we were not able to extend the deadline, which had passed before the service was restored. Instead, we will exclude HW4 in the computation of your final HW scores. The formula for the HW-score calculation will be [Sum of 12 HW Weighted Scores]/(0.9 x 12) x 5, in which HW4 is excluded.

February 2

Review for Exam 1 will be given on Thursday, February 9, 6:15 pm - 8:10 pm, in Florida Gym room 220. The first half of the review will be a short summary of subjects, followed by example problems chosen by the instructor. In the second half, he will show how to do problems chosen by students from past exams, the textbook, HITT quizzes, and other sources. Come to the review with questions and a list of problems you would like to be discussed.

February 1

Exam 1 locations: The first exam will be on Tuesday, February 14, 8:20 - 10:10 pm. Your room depends on the first letter of your last name (family name).
  • A - F: New Physics Bldg. 1001 (your usual lecture room)
  • G - P: Carleton 100
  • Q - Z: Turlington L007
For security reasons, you must come to the room to which you are assigned.

Material you must bring, and you are allowed to bring, is listed on the "Exam and Quiz Policy" page accessible from the menu bar on the left.

January 22

Office hours, Wednesday: Prof. Takano will not be able to hold his office hours on Wednesday, January 25. Instead, his office hours this week will be on Tuesday, January 24, periods 4 (10:40 am - 11:30 am) and 8 (3:00 pm - 3:50 pm).

January 9

Slides used in today's lectures have been posted at e-Learning, along with slides intended for Wednesday. Preliminary slides posted before lectures will be labeled .....-P1.pdf, .....-P2.pdf, etc., with the letter "P" near the end of the file name. After the lectures, they will be replaced with the final slides actually used, labeled with a letter "L" in place of the "P". This will be the last announcement about lecture slides. In the future, they will be posted without announcements.

January 6

Slides used in the lectures on Wednesday and today have been posted at e-Learning. In e-Learning, click on "Courses," choose "PHY2049: Physics with Calc 2, Spring 2017," then click on "Files" on the inner sidebar.
