PHY 2049 - Physics 2 with Calculus - Spring 2017

Textbook

(pay close attention or it will cost you more than necessary)

The textbook for the course is Fundamentals of Physics, 10th Edtion, by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker (Wiley, 2013). The homework in this course is done online using the WileyPLUS system via e-Learning. Access to the online homework system requires a WileyPLUS registration code.

There are three options for purchasing the textbook/WileyPLUS registration code:

OPTION 1. Buy the book at the UF Book Store. Make sure it says "with WileyPLUS" and that it is the 10th edition. The ISBN number for this set, bundled with the WileyPLUS registration code, is 9781118992371. This bundle is unique to the University of Florida and sells at a specially negotiated price of under $130.

DO NOT THROW OUT THE CARD THAT IS PACKAGED WITH THE BOOK. IT CONTAINS THE REGISTRATION CODE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO ACCESS THE ONLINE HOMEWORK. IF YOU THROW THIS OUT YOU WILL HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW REGISTRATION CODE! KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER.

OPTION 2. You can purchase an online only version of the text including the WileyPLUS registration code at the special UF rate of $40. This special deal is available only at http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-822622.html.

At the checkout, make sure to use:

  • First Name: Your first name as it appears on the Registrar's list for PHY2049
  • Last Name: Your last name (i.e. family name) as it appears on the Registrar's list for PHY2049
  • E-mail: Use ONLY AND ONLY your Gatorlink E-mail address (i.e. name@ufl.edu)

To get homework credit you must correctly input all four fields!

OPTION 3. Purchase an online only version of the text, bundled with a WileyPLUS acceess code, for $40 as described above, and buy separately a used hardcopy of the 9th edition. The 9th and 10th editions have nearly identical contents -- other than the numbering of sections, some rearrangement of texts, and the numbering of end-of-chapter problems. For those who would like to choose this option, a table of corresponding section numbers for the two editions will be posted at e-Learning.

What do the instructors recommend? Because this is a foundational course for science and engineering, it is likely that you will find the hard copy text an important and useful reference for your future courses and in your career for many years to come. We therefore recommend OPTION 1 or OPTION 3.

If you are undecided, you may access WileyPLUS free for 14 days. For that, please first read the "Register:WileyPLUS" page, accessible from the menu bar on the left, very carefully.
