ON-LINE GRADED HOMEWORK (due by 2:00am on the Wednesdays shown below)

To get onto the online homework system (Webassign) you will need to enter the access code that comes with a new textbook (option 1); or if you have a used textbook, you can purchase just the online access to Webassign (option 2). Have your access code ready when you first access the system.

To register on Webassign: go to Webassign and click “Register” and follow the instructions there.  To properly get credit for your efforts you must enter the following  information correctly:
  • Username: Your Your UF-ID number (8 digits including any leading zeroes, e.g. 12345678) + the word physics. Examples: 12345678physics, 01234567physics
  • Institution: ufl
  • Your password.  The default initial password is phy2053.  You MUST change this password to one of your own when you log on.  The default password will not function after 2 weeks.  The password may be changed by using the "My Options" link in the upper right corner of the page.
Note you must input correctly your Gatorlink E-mail address and your UF-ID!

Do not delay in logging-on/registering on the system. If you are encountering difficulties, have a look at this step-by-step guide to registering.

Not getting your homework in because you waited to the last minute and had trouble registering will not excuse you from the resulting zero on the homework assignment. Detailed homework solutions will be available on this page immediately after the due date/time. Note that the first online homework assignment is due on Wednesday, Jan. 13.   It is not graded and intended only to give you practice with Webassign.  Once the due date/time has passed no further input of answers for credit will be accepted. It is your responsibility to get your homework in on time. Last minute computer/local server problems will not excuse you from this responsibility. Waiting to the last minute to submit your homework is like playing Russian Roulette with your homework credit.

The on-line homework portion of the course will count for 15% of the overall course grade. To provide a measure of forgiveness for illnesses and possible network problems, the homework score will be normalized using the following formula:

Normalized HW score = (Your score/Maximum possible)*150/8.5).

The factor 150/8.5 normalizes your score so that a 85% is increased to 100% and then converts it to a number between 0 and 15 (maximum possible is 15 even if you get a number greater than 15 after normalization).

You get 5 tries at submitting a correct answer for each question. The tolerance for getting a numeric answer correct is typically 2%. Do not wait until your last attempt to ask for help on solving a problem if you are having difficulty. Not all homework assignments will have exactly the same number of chapter problems. The answer key will be available on WebAssign after the deadline has passed for an assignment. Additionally, worked-out solutions to the assignment will be linked to this web page during the daytime.
