11/13 The uploading of the grades should now be finished.  Thanks for your patience.  Also, the solutions for Exam 2 are now posted under 'old exams' on Sakai.
11/12 The uploading of your grades on Exam 2 into Sakai has only been partially successful.  We are working on this problem - if you see no score (or a 0) for your grade, it will be coming as soon as possible.  Don't worry, your test *was* scanned and graded.  Nothing is lost.
11/10 Exam 2 (right answer is #1) is now posted on Sakai under "old exams".
11/9 Exam 2 has been graded.  The average score, out of 20, was 13.79.  Excellent performance.  The exam with the correct answers being answer #1 will be posted soon, followed by the solutions and your uploaded scores a bit later.
11/7 If you want more practice on mirrors, read the examples (23.2, 23.3, 23.4, 23.5 and 23.6) in the chapter through again.
11/4,7 Web Assign Homework 9 has problems beyond those in Chap. 23 up through section 23.5.  Feel free to do the problems thru 23-15 in order to prepare for the test (23-29,33,44 are on thin lenses and are not on the test), but the homework assignment due date has been pushed back to 11/14.

10/2 Prof. Stewart is teaching a class for someone for the next two Mondays, so his office hour is now changed to 4th period (10:40 - 11:30 am) on Mondays
9/30 After much discussion with the TA's, and with input from students, question 18 (which asked the charge across the 4C capacitor with respect to the 1 C capacitor,) is being regraded to allow *two* answers as being correct.  'None of the above' *and* '0.52' since the correct answer was close enough to 0.52 as to have caused confusion.  Our apologies.  The regraded scores will appear on Sakai soon.
9/29 Student grades for the first exam are now accessible on Sakai.
9/29 The exam (first answer is the right one) is available on Sakai.  Solutions are coming.
9/27 As announced in class, the room abbreviation "L007" is in Turlington.

9/12 Your proposed Test I problem for extra credit is due to your TA by tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/13 by whatever method and time your TA has announced.
9/8 Some more about problem 10 that we discussed in 3rd period:  We were on the right track (y - y0 = voy * t + 1/2 ay * t**2) since indeed y-y0 = 0 does tell us that
ay = - 2 * voy / t, and we did have the right expression for ay (just g+qE/m).  But somewhere I must have made an arithmetic error.  So just set ay = 2 v0y/t, plug in what you know for v0y and t, then calculate E from the ay you get.  (The problem is that 2 v0y/t is *really* close (but not ! equal) to 9.80.  so qE/m is a small number.) Note:  it's E field pointing down towards Telnar, so E and g-force are in the same direction, so it's g+qE/m. (plus sign)
9/6 Prof. Stewart's office hour is now 7th period on Mondays, at 1:55-2:45 pm, in his office 2132 NPB to better match with students needing help on their homework.  The old Friday office is canceled.

In order to a.) give you a bit more time to finish the first homework and b.) to better align when the homework is due with when it was lectured on/discussion in recitation, we are moving the due date for all homework to Mondays at 11 pm instead of the previous Fridays.  This may take a while to permeate thru all aspects of the web site.
8/24 Sakai should be up and running (8/24; 9:45 am).  Old tests will be uploaded by next week.
8/23 A number of you have observed that PHY2054 is not yet up and running on Sakai.  This appears to be a question of authorization to allow us to add the student rosters.  Tonight at least (8/23) this will not get fixed.  We will keep trying tomorrow.  (At present, there is nothing except old tests to put on Sakai anyway.)

to sign in on webassign the following code has to be used..

Students with Disabilities: Students requesting classroom accommodation for disabilities must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the instructor when requesting accommodation. Then you must print out the PHY2054 Accommodated Test Request (ATR) Form for Fall 2011 (click here for the form). This form must be filled out by the student and returned to the Disability Reseource Center (DCR) at least one week before the first exam. The Accommodated Testing Service (ATS) at DCR will then administer all the exams.

PHY2054 Tea and Cookies Session: Starting on Tuesday August 30 Professor Kumar will host a "tea and cookie" session every Tuesday at 5:00pm in 2165 NPB. Join him for tea, cookies, and help with the physics problems.
WebAssign Passwords for UF-ID's with Leading Zeeros: If your UF-ID has leading zeros you have to omit them in your WebAssign password. For example, UF-ID = 0XXXXXXX WebAssign Password = XXXXXXX and UF-ID = 00XXXXXX WebAssign Password = XXXXXX. Hope that's clear.
PHY 2054 e-Learning Website: The e-Learning WEBsite is now up and running.
The first on-line homework assignment is due by 11:00pm on Friday Sept. 2, 2011. You must login to WebAssign using the username = Your Gatorlink UserName, institution code = ufl, and initial password = Your UF-ID (8 digit number). To log into WebAssign you will also need the access code that comes with your textbook (see the instructions in the syllabus).
Quizzes begin in the discussion sections on Monday and Tuesday September 5-6, 2011.
Discussion sections start on Wednesday August 24, 2011.
Lecture classes start on Tuesday August 23, 2011 (period 2 & 3) in 1001 NPB. The class schedule shows the lecture material covered, exam dates, and the on-line homework problems.
