02-May-2008 |
Final grades entered: We have entered the final grades into
the ISIS system after a spending a significant amount of time on
setting grade boundaries and handling several special cases. You
should be able to see them by Monday or so.
We have read your emails but responded to very few because we did
not want to present any hint of bias. We will try to respond to
these mails over the next few days.
Determining grades for such a large class requires that we be consistent
in carrying out course policies, treat all students fairly and compassionately
and adhere as closely as possible to the grading criteria laid out
at the beginning of the semester. Our goal is always to establish
a consistent and predictable set of expectations (even among different
TAs), while employing generous drop policies on all course work
to allow students to recover from bad days or unavoidable missed
work.
As we stated below, over 52% of the class has a grade of B or more,
larger than average (in a good way). We of course understand that
many people fell just below grade boundaries and there are inevitably
disappointments for people who worked hard and came up short. However,
in a class of 600 students, with grade differences between students
typically several hundredths to a a few tenths of a point, this
situation would occur wherever we set the boundaries. It is sobering
to realize that 133 students are within 1 final exam question of
the next grade boundary.
We wish all of you well and hope that you have a good summer. We
welcome visits and would be glad to talk to you if you plan to take
the course again. Good luck, everyone!

01-May-2008 |
Still working on final grades: We are still working
on grades, but there have been some complications. However, we already
know that we are barely moving the grade boundaries because we have
over 52% of students with B and above, which is very high. |
|
28-Apr-2008 |
Final exam grades are posted on WebAssign. We are pleased
to report that the average was 11.8, a very good showing for an
exam covering the entire semester.
Final grades: We are still dealing with the conflict exams
and with determining final grades. However, you have enough information
to compute your total number of points. Grades are exact for exams
and rounded to two decimal places for HITT, quizzes and WebAssign.
Solutions are now posted. We will post the distribution
shortly.
|
|
24-Apr-2008 |
HITT and quiz scores uploaded: Quiz scores were adjusted
so that every section has an average of 15.00/20. Some sections
were adjusted up and some were adjusted down. If you have questions
about your quiz scores, pleased address them to your TA since he
has the details about your scores.
Office hours: Prof. Avery has modified his office hours
slightly. He will have office hours Thursday 1:30-3:00 and Friday
10:30-12:00, 1:30-3:00.
GatorOne ID required: You must have your GatorOne ID with
you when you take the final exam.
|
|
22-Apr-2008 |
WebAssign grades uploaded to WebAssign: We counted only
chapters 16-25 and dropped 12% of the total points, as discussed
on the grading page.
HITT grades: Because of missing registrations, we cannot
upload HITT grades until we get the latest HITT roster file tomorrow.
Quiz grades: We are still processing quiz grades. We will
post an announcement here when they are uploaded.
Final exam review: Alex will have a review Thursday, April
24, in the classroom (1001 Physics) from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
|
|
20-Apr-2008 |
Office hours: Prof. Avery will be out of town
till Wednesday noon. He will do extra office hours Wednesday afternoon
1:30-4:00, Thursday 10:00-12:00 and 1:30-3:00 and Friday 10:00-12:00,
1:30-3:00. |
|
18-Apr-2008 |
Missing HITT codes: We are missing the registration
information for transmitter IDs 412441 and 415738. If the owners of
these transmitters do not contact us with this information, which
should have been provided at the beginning of the semester through
registration, they will get a 0 HITT score. |
|
16-Apr-2008 |
Formula sheets: As stated on the grading page, 2 formula
sheets are allowed for the final.
Final exam room assignments: Students are assigned to the
following rooms by the first first few letters of your last name
(family name). Make sure you come to the proper room.
- Bryan 130: A - COM
- Carleton 100: CON - PA
- Flint 50: PE - SN
- Williamson 100: SO - Z
|
|
15-Apr-2008 |
WebAssign and HITT points: We will drop 12% of HITT and
WebAssign points, rather than the 10% that was posted earlier in
the semester. Thus your grade will be calculated by dividing your
total points by 0.88*max points.
Partial grades: We will post HITT, WebAssign and TA quiz
grades to WebAssign next week. The posting will be announced here
so please refrain from sending emails asking when the grades will
be posted.
Extra office hours: Prof. Avery will have extra office hours
Tuesday 1:00-3:00PM, Wed. 10:30-12:00, Thurs. 1:00-3:00, Fri. 10:00-12:00,
1:00-2:30. He will also have extra hours next week that will be
posted later. Prof. Kumar will be largely available in the afternoons
this week and next week, especially between 2-3 PM.
Final exam comments: The final exam is Saturday, April 26,
from 12:30 - 2:30PM. We will post room assignments later.
|
|
13-Apr-2008 |
Final exam questions: The final exam will have 20 questions,
10 covering the material since exam 3 and 10 reviewing the previous
material through exam 3. These latter 10 questions will be taken
solely from our three previous exams and the WebAssign problems
covering 15.1 - 23.3, though they might be reworded.
|
|
7-Apr-2008 |
Exam 3 scores for Disability Office exam takers are now
posted.
Determining grades: We are aware that Drop day is Friday,
April 11. We have therefore updated the grading page to make more
precise the calculation of your grade, particularly the exam score
and the determination of points from HITT, TA quizzes and WebAssign.
For the quizzes, we shift all students grades (after the drops are
taken into account) to make the average for each TA exactly the
same. We expect that the average per TA will be 15.0/20. So you
can estimate your quiz grade by how well you think you are doing
with respect to your quiz class. You can also ask your TA to give
you an estimate if you need it.
All this information should allow you to estimate your grade at
the end of the semester as a function of final exam score. The final
exam is worth 40 points (20 questions or 2 points per question),
so you can see what grade you would achieve for different final
exam scores.
Office hours this week: Prof. Avery will be gone Tues -
Fri and Prof. Kumar will be away Mon - Wed because of their kids'
spring break.
|
|
4-Apr-2008 |
Exam 3 solutions: The exam 3 solutions are now posted. The
average was 11.73, which is pretty good and slightly higher than
in past semesters. The score distribution has been posted.
Exam 3 grades have been uploaded to WebAssign. We did not
get the scores yet from the Disability Office so those will only
appear on Monday.
To see your exam score, log into WebAssign, click on My Assignments,
then All Assignments and find the score for Exam 3. Students with
scores of -999 have incorrect exam codes on their ScanTron. They
will have to find their exam question sheets and talk to Dr. Kumar
after class on Tuesday.
|
|
2-Apr-2008 |
Extra office hours!: Prof. Avery will be around
Wednesday from 1:30-4:00 and Thursday from 1:30-3:30, a total of 4.5
extra hours. |
|
31-Mar-2008 |
Exam 3 room assignments: Students are assigned to the following
rooms by the first first few letters of your last name (family name).
Make sure you come to the proper room because space is limited.
- Carleton 100: A - MAX

|
25-Feb-2008 |
Office hours: Remember that Prof. Avery will
be gone this week. |
|
21-Feb-2008 |
HITT registration: We are still missing registration info
for two students in P4: 415738 and 412441. If you are not getting
any HITT mails, this is the reason why.
Homework date for Chapter 24 has been moved from Tuesday,
April 15 to Sunday, April 13. Homework is always due on the date
shown and each assignment is available for about two weeks. Accordingly,
we do not grant extensions if an assignment is forgotten.
|
|
19-Feb-2008 |
Office hours: Prof. Avery will be out of town Wednesday
and Thursday of this week and all next week. He will hold extra
office hours today (Tuesday) from 3:10-5:10 and Friday from 2:00-4:00.
HITT remote registration: We still have some remotes that
are unregistered. 415738 (P4) and 417010 (P5).
Res_monster solution is shown here.
You should work this out.

|
18-Feb-2008 |
Using old PHY2049 exams: Many PHY2054 students are not aware
of the usefulness of the PHY2049 exams, which are more abundant
thant the PHY2054 exams and have full solutions. These exams are
good study guides since approximately 80-90% of the material is
identical between PHY2049 and PHY2054.
|
|
11-Feb-2008 |
Exam 1 modified scores: There was a problem with question
#14 (NASA room) where the correct answer was (5) (317 kV) not (1)
(410 kV). We decided to give everyone credit for this problem rather
than lower some scores and raise others. The average is now 11.2
and the updated score distribution is plotted on the solutions
page.
We have uploaded the new scores (called "Exam 1 new"). People who
chose answers (2) - (5) for this problem had their scores increased
by 1. If you chose (1), you were already given credit for it. :-)
|
|
6-Feb-2008 |
Exam 1 solutions are posted on the solutions page. We are
still working on the scores.
Exam 1 scores uploaded to WebAssign. Question #15 (mistakenly
said #9 before) was scored as a freebie because of the wording.
The average was 10.3. The distribution will be posted later.
To see your exam score, log into WebAssign, click on My Assignments,
then All Assignments and find the score for Exam 1. Students with
scores of -999 have incorrect exam codes on their ScanTron. They
will have to talk to Dr. Kumar after class Thursday.

|
3-Feb-2008 |
Exam procedures: Exam is Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 8:20 - 10:20.
Please come early. The following information is on the grading
policy page.
- You must bring your GatorOne ID

- All cell phones must be completely
off and out of sight. Any cell phone seen during the exam will
result in a grade of 0 on the exam.
- Bring pencil, eraser, sharpener, calculator
- Bring one 8.5"x11" formula sheet (both sides OK)
- Bring (blank!) scratch paper.
ScanTron information: You must bubble in all information,
including your name, initials, UFID, and exam code (cols. 76-80).
There is no section number. Because of the effort that must be expended
in recovering this info, missing info will result in a 0.5 point
penalty.
Exam 1 room assignments: Students are assigned to the following
rooms by the first first few letters of your last name (family name).
Make sure you come to the proper room because space is limited.

(1001 Physics) from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Note that he was given this
time by the Registrar. Yes, we know it's Superbowl Sunday... :-)
Contacting us: We find that many people are not following
the directions on how to contact us. Always send mail
to both professors and always have a meaningful
subject line with 2054 somewhere in it (i.e., "Webassign
problem in 2054" not just "2054"). Otherwise, we cannot track messages.

|
30-Jan-2008 |
New lecture notes for the Tuesday lecture were put online.
They include some new slides and some edits of existing slides.
Homework solutions are now online on the exam, homework
solutions page. They are password protected and the password will
only be given out in class.

28-Jan-2008 |
Prof. Avery extra office hours: Prof. Avery will
have extra office hours this week. Aside from his normal office hours,
he will be around 2:00-4:00 Monday and 2:00-4:00 Wednesday. He might
do yet another set of hours later in the week depending on how busy
the other hours are. |
|
24-Jan-2008 |
Lecture notes for this week: These are linked to the appropriate
chapter sections on the schedule page.
HITT scores will be sent today or Friday (they were sent Sunday).
Supplemental Instruction room location for Tuesday, Period
6, has been changed. Please see the office
hour page.
|
|
22-Jan-2008 |
HITT scores: Unfortunately, the HITT scores did not go out
correctly yesterday. There is a problem from sending them from a
location outside UF. We are working on it and will try again.
HITT Update: We managed to get the HITT scores emailed this
afternoon. However, there are about 50 students with unregistered
transmitters. YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR TRANSMITTER.
If you register in two periods, you will only get points for points
in one period. We cannot combine points between sections.
|
|
22-Jan-2008 |
Lecture notes from last week are online and are linked to
the appropriate chapter sections on the schedule
page.
HITT scores starting from Tuesday (Jan. 15) were mailed
to everyone. The cumulative scores starting from Jan. 15 will be
mailed once a week (each mail will thus be longer than the previous
one).
WebAssign Chapter 15 was for practice and does not count
(as stated here and on the WebAssign page).
|
|
18-Jan-2008 |
WebAssign purchase and login: To get into WebAssign, go
to the WebAssign link on the side of the page and then click on
the link at the bottom. When you login you will see a screen that
gives you the option to pay online. At present, that is the only
way to pay.
Prof. Avery travel: Prof. Avery had a lot of travel this
week and the week of Jan. 21-25. He will be around for extra office
hours today (Jan. 18, Friday) from 3:00-5:00PM and will take on
additional hours the week of Jan. 28 (TBA).
Contacting us: We find that many people are not following
the directions on how to contact us. Always send mail
to both professors and always have a meaningful
subject line with 2054 somewhere in it (i.e., Webassign
problem in 2054 not just 2054). Otherwise, we cannot track messages.
|
|
15-Jan-2008 |
Exam dates finalized: We have been working with the Registrar
to finalize the exam dates. The dates are Feb. 5 (Exam 1), Mar.
5 (Exam 2) and Apr. 3 (Exam 3). Only the date for Exam 3 was changed
from the original date!
Supplementary Instruction: Times and locations for the SI
sessions (2 Tuesday and 1 Thursday) are now on the office
hour page.

08-Jan-2008 |
Welcome to PHY2054! This is a new web site, so material
is still being added in several places. We welcome comments and
suggestions for making this course web site a unique resource for
students. In particular, we would appreciate links to online material
(explanations, problems and solutions, interesting applications,
applets) that could enhance learning.
Exam schedule is not fixed yet! We are still working on
the dates, which we hope to be fixed this week. Do not make
plans around the current dates.
WebAssign: We have set up a practice assignment (Chapter
15) on WebAssign that you can work on now until the first assignment
(Chapeter 16) is due.
Contacting us by email: If you need to contact us, always
send mail to both professors and always include 2054
in the subject line. Otherwise, we cannot track messages.
Discussion sections begin Wednesday, Jan. 9
Note that the textbook is Serway & Faughn, not
Halliday & Resnick.
