PHY 2054 (Physics 2 without Calculus) Spring 2014

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Date Announcement
Apr. 28 Final exam results: The key and full solution are posted on the Old exams link on Sakai. The histogram of scores is on the exams page. The average was 12.66, which is very good. We hope to have the scores posted on Sakai later today.

Final grades: We are working on final grades and expect to lower the grade boundaries by amounts that we still need to determine. Quiz grades were adjusted (by an amount >=0, depending on TA) to maintain identical averages across TAs. It takes time to calculate final grades and we are being careful to maintain fairness across the board, so please do not send emails requesting special treatment. Because of the size of the class, it is inevitable that many students will be near grade boundaries.
Apr. 24 Final exam room assignments: The final exam takes place Saturday, Apr. 26 from 8:00 - 10:00PM. We are not using the same rooms as last time. Students are assigned to an exam room based on the first two letters of your last name (family name). The room assignments are shown here. For security reasons, you must go to the correct room!

Feb. 4 Due date for Homework 5 extended: Homework 5 is now due Friday, Feb. 14.
Jan. 28 Prof. Avery office hours this week: Prof. Avery will be traveling after class Tuesday until late Sunday. Accordingly, he will not be able to conduct office hours Tuesday and Wednesday but will be back in form next week. We still have plenty of office hours to fill up the week, however. :-)
Jan. 16 Hong Kong program: Prof. Takano described the Hong Kong University exchange program in class today. Here are the slides of his presentation.
Jan. 15 WebAssign problem: As several of you noted, there appears to be an error in problem #11 (16.40) in the first homework assignment. If it turns out to be the case (it looks like they didn't include the sin(45) factor) we will either give everyone credit for the problem or just not count it, depending on what course is easier.

Note that this issue occurs occasionally with a new textbook (we've only had this book for a couple of years) and when new problems are assigned. We tell WebAssign and they fix the problem for the future.
Jan. 10 ATR link fixed: We fixed the link for the Accommodated Test Request below (link). Thanks to one of you for pointing out the problem.
Jan. 7 HITT points and registration: Please register your remote on the HITT page. Once you provide your UFID and transmitter ID (6 digts on the back of your transmitter), the software will link your name to the transmitter and the points you accumulate will be assigned to your name. Otherwise, the points accumulate but we have no way to assign them to you. You can only use your HITT transmitter in one class period.
Jan. 7 WebAssign password: You can set your password yourself in WebAssign even if you cannot get in. First, try to login to WebAssign using your GatorLink name and UFID as your password (or whatever you had switched to). If that doesn't work, click on the link "Reset Password" just above the password box and WebAssign will mail instructions to your ufl.edu account on how to change your password. Note that we have set all email addresses in WebAssign to ufl.edu addresses and eliminated any commercial email addresses.

Please email us about WebAssign problems only after you have tried this procedure, or you do not see the course PHY 2054 once you are logged into WebAssign or you are having other troubles.
Jan. 7 Students with Disabilities: Students requesting classroom accommodation for disabilities must first register with the Dean of Students Office. That office will provide you with documentation that you will provide to the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Please print and fill out the Accommodated Test Request (ATR) Form, and return it to the Disability Resource Center (DCR) at least one week before the first exam. The Accommodated Testing Service (ATS) at DCR will administer all exams.
Jan. 7 Lectures start Tuesday January 7 (period 4 & 5) in Physics 1001. The class schedule shows the lecture schedule, exam dates, and on-line homework due dates.
Discussion sections start Wednesday January 8.
Quizzes begin in the discussion sections in the week of January 20.
