Calculating the final score
and
Letter Grade ranges
Your letter-grade-determining final
score [120 points, max.] has 5 components — see the 'Grades' section of the syllabus
to remind yourself of the weightings. Proper weighting of each component required normalization.
Here's how it was done:
1. Exams 1 & 2: Muliply your Exam 1 score x 25/19 [= 1.32] & your Exam 2 score x 25/18 [= 1.39]. This normalizes each
to its 25-point basis. Add these two numbers together.
2. Final exam:
Note that one question [the 'vodka shot-glass'] was dropped, reducing the number of questions and the maximum possible
raw score to 15. Multiply your score [posted on your
WebAssign page] by 1.67 to normalize it to the 25-point basis.
3. Add the results you got in Steps 1 and 2,
above, giving you a number no
higher than 75.
4. To this number add your discussion/recitation score (get from your section instructor; maximum 25 points). Your total
should now be
100 or less.
5. WebAssign: there were 11
assignments, totalling 182 points. WebAssign posting totals included your Exams 1 & 2 scores; be sure to remove them if you are using
WA totals to do your own calculation. Your lowest-scoring assignment was dropped, leaving a
maximum of 172 points.
The result was divided by 11.46 [172/11.46 = 15] to
normalize it to the 15-point maximum weighting.
6. h-itt
(in-lecture/'clicker' quizzes): there were 14 quizzes totalling 74 points = 37
questions @ 2 points each. The
lowest 10% were to be dropped, but 10% = 3.7 questions, so we dropped your
lowest-scoring four (4) questions.
Maximum points (adjusted) = 66.
Your adjusted score was then divided
by 13.2 to normalize to the
maximum weighting of 5 points.
7. The total of the above
5 numbers should be a number less than 120. This is your final
score.
Letter Grade Ranges based on final scores are as follows:
A: 101 points and up; A-: 98 - 100
B+: 94 - 97; B: 87 - 93; B-: 84 - 86
C+: 80 - 83; C: 65 - 79; C-: 60 - 64
D: 46 - 59
E: below 46
