Every semester some students sign up for PHY2060 and then decide that PHY2048 would be at a more appropriate level for them. If this is done early enough in the semester, there should not be any problem in doing the switch. Here are the steps involved. 1. The student should contact the PHY2048 instructors or coordinator to make sure it is OK, and they have an agreement for how their grade in PHY2048 is to be calculated. My experience has been that as long as the switch is done prior to the first exam in PHY2048 this should not be a problem because the student can take the exam with the rest of the PHY2048 class. After that, it is really up to the PHY2048 instructor/coordinator. FYI in Fall 2009 the first exam in PHY2048 is on September 29. 2. The student needs to see Chris Scanlon in the Student Services Office on the first floor of the New Physics Building to find an available section and to get approval. Chris will then add a comment on a Nerdc screen to allow the student to register for the specific available section. 3. Because the student is dropping and adding a class after the drop/add deadline, there would normally be a fee incurred. However, because we are switching the student from one Physics 1 class to another, we can make the case for not incurring any extra fees. Any of the Physics department advisors can write a letter like: "After attending PHY2060 Enriched Physics 1 with Calculus, studentname has decided that ordinary Physics 1 with Calculus (PHY2048) would be at a more appropriate level. Please allow him/her to switch from PHY2060 to PHY2048 without incurring any additional fees." 4. The student goes to their college to get switched from PHY2060 to PHY2048. If they are in Liberal Arts and Sciences, then they go to the AAC. If they are in Engineering, then they go to the Engineering advising center. 5. The student takes the letter asking for no additional fees to the registrar in Criser hall and petitions for a waiver of fees.
