In this course students will be exposed to physics developed in the
late 19th through the early 20th century including relativiry, quantum
theory, and their applications to modern physics. Land mark
experiments that have led to the new ideas and understanding, and their
theoretical developments will be discussed. This course
deals with the topics with an emphasis on the conceptual rather than
rigorous mathematical understanding. However, as in any physics
courses, students should expect to perform quantitative analysis using
calculus, geometry, and differential equations as well as qualitative
estimations based on order of magnitude calculations and dimensional
It is expected that students are comfortable with calculus including
vector calculus, differentiation, integration, and trigonometry.
Students should also be able to solve ordinary differential equations.
It is also expected that students read textbook chapters thoroughly at
least once preferably before the class and review lecture notes timely.

Math Prep Test Students will have to review Essential Math in the first week and will be tested in class.

Students will be asked to discuss and solve selected HW
problems during the classes after the HW due. HW grade will be
given based on this performance and the submitted work. Selected HW problems will be
tested in the exams.
Attending physics colloquium regularly would expose you to the current
topics in physics. Students will get credit up to 6 additional points for attending colloquia
(Thursday 4 pm in #1002) if a report is submitted. Each report (3 pts)
should include less than 300 words summary of the talk with his/her own
questions on the subject or asked during the presentation.
In-class Quiz There will be 4 in-class quizzes. 20 - 30 mins will be given for each quiz. Quiz should be consdiered as a small exam.
Exams There will be two Midterm exams (in-class) and one comprehensive Final exam. Please check the Course Calendar for the exam time and date.
