TEXTBOOK:
Classical Mechanics by J.R. Taylor
REFRENCES: An Introduction to Mechanics by D. Kleppner and R.J. Kolenkow; Classical Dynamics by Thornton and Marion; Dimensional Analysis by A.A. Sonin.
DESCRIPTION
This course is the first part of two-semester sequence in undergraduate level classical mechanics. Topics include matrices, vector calculus, Newtonian mechanics, frames of reference, conservation laws, harmonic oscillator, and calculus of variations.
GOAL
1. Understand the principles of Newtonian mechanics and apply those to various mechanical systems.
2. Develop physicsal intuition.
3. Develop mathemetical skills in vector calculus, differential equation, coordinate systems, and calculus of variations.
SAKAI
Your grade will be posted on SAKAI course. If you have not used Sakai, please visit Sakai Help and learn how to use it. I will adopt Sakai gradually since it is a relatively new system. Some surveys might be conducted through Sakai during the semester.
GRADING POLICY
Homework
Homework problems will be assigned near the end of each lecture and will be posted online. Students are expected to work on the problems each day and submit their work typically once a week on the following Monday. Due to hoolidays and exams, the submission day may vary. Each homework will be graded not by the content but by the effort. Evidence of work is enough to get a full credit for that problem. Late homework will not be graded. Make your solutions neat, concise, and intelligible.
Homeworks submitted late will not be graded.
Exams There will be 3 in-class exams and a final exam.
Policy on missed Exam or Quiz:
A make-up will be arranged separately.

C is the lowest passing grade for Physics majors.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:
Students who require accommodation for disabilities must first contact the Dean
of Students Office. That office will provide documentation, which the student
must bring to his/her instructors during the first week of the
semester.
ACADEMIC HONESTY: Each student
is expected to hold himself/herself to a high standard of academic honesty.
Under the UF academic honesty policy, unauthorized assistance or the use of
unauthorized resources is strictly forbidden on work-for-credit. Although
discussions among the students are highly encouraged, you are to work alone on
all homework assignments unless specified differently. Fabrication or
falsification of excuses or related documentation is also a violation of the UF
academic honesty policy. Violations
of this policy will be dealt with severely. There will be no warnings or
exceptions.
