PHY 4324 - Eletromagnetism 2 - Spring 2019



This is the second part of the two-semester sequence on electromagnetism. The first part, PHY 3323, dealt with static elecricity and magnetism. This course, PHY 4324, is focused on electrodynamics and corresponds to Chapters 7 - 11 of D. J. Griffiths, Introduction to Electrodynamics, 4th ed. (Cambridge U. Press, 2017). You may use the 3rd edition of the book, if you would like to save money.

Typos in formula sheets: There were sign errors in two of the equations for mangetic-dipole radiation. These have been corrected. Thanks to Andrew for finding the typos.

Chapter 11 and 12 recommended problems: The lists of Chapter 11 and 12 problems in e-Learning are now complete.

Recommended problems from Chapter 12: The list has been extended to cover all problems in Sections. Problems from the end of chapter will be added shortly.

Formula sheets: A new set of equations has been added to the formula sheets posted in e-Learning.

Final exam will be on Tuesday, April 30, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm in Matherly Hall 018. The exam covers only Chapters 11 and 12 of the book, excluding Subsections 11.2.3, 12.3.3, 12.3.4, and 12.3.5.

Formula sheets have been updated for the final exam and posted in e-Learning. The file will be printed and given at the exam.

Exam 2: The exam will comprise three problems, one from Chapter 9 and two from Chapter 10. None is from Sections 9.1, 9.3, 9.4, or Subsection 10.1.4. The exam will be from 8:20 pm tomorrow evening, Thursday, March 28 in NPB 1002.

Homework 4: Contrary to what the problem pdf file says, there will be no fourth problem in this assignment,

Final Exam location: The final exam on Tuesday, April 30, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm will be in Matherly Hall 0018. Matherly Hall is an old College of Business building, very near the northeast corner of the campus.

Formula sheet typos: In the definition of Maxwell's stress tensor, all diagonal elements had a factor-of-2 error in the second term. These typos have been corrected, thanks to students who have reported them to me.

Exam 1 and 2 dates: The dates and times of Exams 1 and 2 have been finalized. They are as they appear in the course schedule--Monday, February 11, and Thursday, March 28, both 8:20 pm - 10:10 pm. The exams will be in NPB 1002. I am still waiting for the Registrar to assign a classroom for the final exam, scheduled to be on Tuesday, April 30.

Please note that the list of recommended problems for Chapter 7 now shows problem numbers in the 3rd edition of Griffith along with those in the 4th edition. If you have downloaded an earlier list and if you use the 3rd edition, make sure to replace it with the new list.
