TEXTBOOK: Concepts in Thermal Physics by S.J. Blundell and K.M. Blundell

PREQUISITES: PHY 3513 , PHY4604, and Diff. Eq.

DESCRIPTION
The course is the second of the PHY3513-4523 sequence. With the knowledge of thermodynamics, we will develope techniques with which various thermodynamic quatities can be calculated for classical and quantum mechanical systems.

GRADING POLICY
Homework     Five sets of HW will be assigned in this course. Each homework will be distributed as a PDF file through e-mail, usually on Friday. The due date of homework will be specified on the homework sheet (usually a week after). Make your solutions neat, concise, and intelligible.
Penalty for overdue homework: 20% reduction for one day, 50% reduction for two days, and no credit afterwards.

In-class Quizzes    There will be in-class quizzes. Approximately 20 - 25 mins will be given for each quiz. Quiz will ask mostly conceptual aspects on the subjects covered in the previous week's classes and homework problems. Students can drop one quiz.

Exams      There will be 3 one-hour-long exams in-class and 1 two-hour-long exam during the final week (see Class Schedule for the dates). The lowest score exam among three in-class exams will not be reflected in the final grade. Students are not allowed to bring their own formula sheet (limited to one letter size paper).

Policy on missed Exam or Quiz:
If a student misses a quiz, or an exam beyond the drop limit, the missed quiz will be replaced by the student’s average score of the quizzes (not including dropped one) and a special arrangment will be made case by case for the missed exam.

Composition of Grade
Quiz 20% (allow 1 quiz drop)
Homework 10%
Exams 20% each in-class exam, 30% final
Total 100%

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Students who require accommodation for disabilities must first contact the Dean of Students Office. That office will provide documentation, which the student must bring to his/her instructors during the first week of the semester.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Each student is expected to hold himself/herself to a high standard of academic honesty. Under the UF academic honesty policy, unauthorized assistance or the use of unauthorized resources is strictly forbidden on work-for-credit. Although discussions among the students are highly encouraged, you are to work alone on all homework assignments unless specified differently. Fabrication or falsification of excuses or related documentation is also a violation of the UF academic honesty policy.  Violations of this policy will be dealt with severely. There will be no warnings or exceptions.
