The objective of this course is to provide background and introduction in several current research areas of modern condensed matter physics.  This fall, we present four sets of lectures.  The speakers, their topics and the scheduled dates are:

P. J. Hirschfeld    “The Pseudogap State in Superconducting Cuprate Materials”    Aug 25-Sept 19
P. Kumar            “From Spin Hall Effect to Multiferroics”                                      Sept. 22-Oct. 10
K. Muttalib          “Transport in Disordered Systems”                                            Oct. 13- Nov. 3
J. Dufty et al       “Computational Methods for Correlated Quantum Systems”          Nov. 5-Dec. 9

These represent some of the currently active frontiers of intellectual interest. In an important organizational feature, lecture notes will be provided in advance, when possible.

For Fall 2008, administrative responsibilities for the course have been assigned to Prof. Kumar:

The classes start on August 25 and end December 9. They meet MWF, period 5 (11:45 AM -12:35PM), in NPB 1200.

Attendance at all lectures is expected. The final grade will be either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. This will be decided on the basis of stated requirements from each of the four professors prior to their series of lectures. These requirements may be a short term paper on a topic arranged with the professor, a presentation to the class, or assigned work outside class.

All writing should be clear, typed, organized and comprehensive, worthy of people aspiring to be international scholars in Physics.
