The objective of this course is to provide background and introduction to several current research areas of modern condensed matter physics.  This fall, we present four sets of lectures.  The speakers, their topics and the scheduled dates are:

D. Maslov        “ Fermi- and non-Fermi liquids”                                                Aug 24-Sept 21
P. Hirschfeld    “Fe-pnictide superconductors”                                                 Sept. 23-Oct. 19
P. Kumar         “Multiferroics”                                                                         Oct. 21- Nov. 13
K. Muttalib       “ Random matrices in condensed matter physics and beyond ”    Nov. 13-Dec. 9

These represent some of the currently active frontiers of intellectual interest. Lecture notes will be provided if possible.

For Fall 2009, administrative responsibilities for the course have been assigned to Prof. Hirschfeld:

The classes start on August 24 and end December 9. They meet TR,  (10:40 AM -12:00PM), in NPB 2165.  Note this is NOT the official listing according to the registrar.  It has been changed to accomodate a conflict of one of the lecturers with a further teaching assignment.

Attendance at all lectures is expected.  The final grade will be a letter grade computed as an average of grades assigned by the 4 instructors on the basis of stated requirements from each prior to his series of lectures.  These requirements may include a short term paper, a presentation to the class, or assigned work outside of class.

All writing should be clear and professional.
