The objective of this course is to provide background and introduction to several current research areas of modern condensed matter physics. This fall, we present four sets of lectures. The speakers, their topics and the scheduled dates are:
1. P. Hirschfeld "Theory of Spectroscopies in Condensed Matter Physics"
Aug 24-Sept 16
2. K. Ingersent "Kondo Effect: Correlations, Spin Effects, and Decoherence in Nanostructures"
Sept 21-Oct 14
3. P. Kumar "Multiferroics: Nonlinear Phenomena"
Oct 19 Nov 9
4. D. Maslov "Spin-orbit Interaction in Condensed Matter Physics"
Nov 11-Dec 7
These
represent some of the currently active frontiers of
intellectual interest. Lecture
notes
will be provided if possible.
For Fall 2010, administrative responsibilities for the course have been assigned to Prof. Maslov.
Attendance at all lectures is expected. The final grade will be a letter grade computed as an average of grades assigned by the 4 instructors on the basis of stated requirements from each prior to his series of lectures. These requirements may include a short term paper, a presentation to the class, or assigned work outside of class.
All writing should be clear and professional.
