PHZ 3113
Introduction to Theoretical Physics — Fall 2013
Overview
PHZ 3113 is an introduction to mathematical methods that are useful in various areas of physics. These methods are illustrated using examples from mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and statistical physics. However, the emphasis is on the mathematical techniques, not their physical applications (which are the focus of other upper-level courses taught by the Department of Physics).
Textbook
The course text is Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences by Mary L. Boas (3rd ed., Wiley, 2005). The text is required, meaning that you will be assumed to have access to it to complete reading and homework assignments.
