Recommended books
The following are classic texts that are available as reprints for under $25 each.
- Mathematics for Physicists by P. Dennery and A. Krzywicki (Dover, 1996). Reprint of a 1967 book. More rigorous and more logically organized than Boas, but somewhat more condensed.
- Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics by F. W. Byron and R. W. Fuller (Dover, 1992). Reprint of two volumes that first appeared in 1969 and 1970. Graduate level text that emphasizes the role of vector spaces in physics.
- A Course in Modern Analysis by E. T. Whittaker and G. N. Watson (4th ed., Cambridge University Press, 1927). Especially good for its depth, and treatment of the special functions commonly encountered in physics.
- Methods of Mathematical Physics by H.Jeffreys and B Swirles Jeffreys (2nd ed., Cambridge University Press, 1950). Presents marhematical methods of widespread utility in physics, with an abundance of illustrative applications.
