PHZ 6426 - SOLID STATE PHYSICS I - FALL 2007

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Monday, December 3
Here is a 'finetuning' of the coverage for our Final Exam, Friday December 7, 11:45a-1:45p, NPB 1011.

1. You should expect questions based on material covered in Chs. 8-10, and Chs.20-23. There will be some conceptual/qualitative and some analytical/lightly numerical problems; no heavy calculations will be required, but you may bring your calculator.

2. The exam will again be closed book, but you can bring your favorite formula collection on a single 'cheat sheet'.

Wednesday, November 28
The distribution of maximum scores are given at the "Grading Policies" link. On the scale of 1-100, the letter grades will be as usual:

80-100 A
73-79 B+
65-72 B
55-64 C+
45-54 C
etc.

I am sure that nobody will fall THAT low!

As to the coverage for the final exam, 11:45a-1:45p on Friday December 7, the HEAVY, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVE emphasis will be on Chs.20-23 of AM. Of course many of the notions in these chapters like crystal symmetry and their consequencies, density-of-states, etc. covered earlier in the Midterm materials will 'return'.

Friday, November 16
By 'overwhelming' majority 'vote' of support I have decided that the final exam will be moved from December 13 to Friday December 7. I propose that we meet starting at the regular class time (11:45a) in our lecture room 1011. If anyone has conflicts with any other exam that day, contact me and we will work something out.

I have also added 25 points to all your Midterm II scores, to compensate for my mistake of giving too long an exam.

Tuesday, November 13
The balance of the semester will be devoted to Chapters 20 through 23. Chapter 20 will not be covered in class, but should be studied. Chs.21-23, especially Chs. 22 and 23, will be the topic of the remaining nine lectures.

I have made changes in the Course Schedule and Homework Assignments links. Please refer to those for homeworks 8 and 9, and their dates.

Tuesday, November 6
First, I had the HW6 answers posted only this Monday morning Nov 5. I am sorry for that, I forgot that on Friday Nov 2, due to Homecoming, the 'Physics Webmaster office' was closed!

Second, I strongly urge you to come and see me to discuss your project paper topic. It is due in a month!

Third, I also urge you to look at the answers for the Midterm II questions. As you undoubtedly know, your performance was not stellar. But I am partly to blame, as I realized (too late) that the amount of writing etc. in a class period was too much. Yet, I believe that you could, and should have known most of the answers. But nothing is lost if you take the time to look at the answers.

Thursday, October 4
The first Midterm will administered Monday October 8, during our regular class period. It will cover Chs.1-5, and will be a closed book exam. You can bring a single 'cheat sheet', filled on both sides with your favorite formulas etc., as densely written as you can read without a microscope!

Friday, September 21
We will have a lecture on Monday September 24, but there will be NO lectures on Wednesday September 26 and Friday September 28. On Monday October 1 we will resume lectures on Chapters 5 and 6.

Do not forget that we have the first Midterm exam on October 8 (in class), covering Chs.1-5.

September 10, 2007
The deadline for Homework #1 has been postponed until today 5p. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS! You can put it in my mailbox, or in the box next to my door at NPB 2320. Looking forward to your first performance!
