Particle astrophysics at the University of Florida

Group members:

Prof. Laura Baudis

Laura Baudis arrived at UF in January 2004. She is dedicating her research to answer fundamental questions in particle astrophysics and cosmology. Before coming to Florida, she spent three years at Stanford University, where she worked on the CDMS experiment. Prior to moving to California, she spent four years at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. In Heidelberg, she was involved in the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment, which had the goal to measure the neutrino mass by detecting a very rare nuclear decay in 76-Ge, and in the Heidelberg Dark Matter Search experiment. She played a crucial role in the initial planning of the GENIUS project, which will use 1 tonne of enriched 76-Ge for neutrino mass measurements and dark matter searches.During her PhD thesis she spent many months working in the Gran Sasso Undeground Laboratory in the Abbruzzese mountains where she enjoyed the local food and Montepulciano, as well as the Italian language.

Dr. Samuel Leclercq

Samuel Leclrecq finished his PhD thesis in 2004 at the CRTBT/CNRS, Grenoble. He developed a ground based large bolometer array for cosmology application at large field of view in the millimeter wavelengths range. He plays clarinet, saxophone and piano, and likes to roller, paraglide, swim, cycle, ski, snowboard and climbe. He is also a comic-strip and film enthusiast.

Dr. Joerg Orboeck

Joerg Orboeck obtained his PhD at the RWTH AAchen in 2003. He was involved in the AMS experiment, which will look for anti matter and dark matter in space. He also spent one year at the University of Liverpool working on the ATLAS experiment. Joerg is passionate about pursuing research in astro-particle physics.

Jesse Angle

Jesse Angle attended the University of Washington in Seattle, near where he was born and raised. He graduated there with degrees in Physics and Astronomy along with a few minors. Over the course of his studies, he worked in several labs, including a plasma confinement experiment, a lunar laser ranging experiment attempting to study gravity, as well as the LISA project. When he's not doing physics, he snow skis, windsurfs, wakeboards, reads and hangs out with his wonderful wife.

Aaron Manalaysay

Aaron Manalaysay received his B.S. in Physics in 2002 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. As an undergrad he was involved in development of a compact electron accelerator using rotating microwave resonance cavities (at George Mason University), and later joined the CDMS collaboration at CWRU. He continued his involvement in the CDMS collaboration at CWRU for a year after graduation, before attending graduate school. Aaron plays the saxophone and was involved in various local jazz and funk bands while living in Cleveland; music and physics are his chief interests. He is currently a grad student at University of Florida, and intends to devote his career to particle physics, particle astrophysics, and cosmology.

David Day

Ivan Diaz

Ivan Diaz is an undergraduate student from Palm Bay, FL who recently joined the group. He is currently a junior at UF and is concentrating on Physics and Chemistry. Besides physics, he enjoys traveling, skydiving, and most types of music. Eventually he hopes to go on to graduate school and (pending future events) a very early retirement.

Former group members:

Chris West

Chris West was, until recently, an undergraduate working on the CDMS experiment. He has since moved to Stanford, CA, where he plans to pursue interests in hiking and hang-gliding. He also enjoys cooking over an open fire. In the picture above, he is savoring a roasted carrot.
