This experiment shows the idea of inertia and friction as you pull the tablecloth out from underneath the dishes. A rapid pull leaves the disheson the table while a slow pull moves the dishes and would pull them off. The fork and spoon can be placed on the plate so they stay when the cloth is pulled or they can be placed directly on the cloth where they will not have enough mass (inertia) to overcome the friction and will be pulled off while the rest of the dishes stay in place.
