This tube is filled with natural gas and has holes along the topside where you ignite the gas. A speaker is mounted at one end of the tube and sounds can be driven into the tube and tuned to resonance. When a resonant frequency is found the flames along the top of the tube will form a wave pattern. The speed of sound in natural gas may be measured by measuring the flaming wave's length. Because this is a pressure wave the wavelength is measured from one peak, skip a peak, to the THIRD peak. |
