Physics Computer Systems

The Department of Physics Computer systems and networks are located in Williamson Hall, McCarty C and the Nuclear Sciences Building. Several different hardware vendors and operating systems are installed and supported. Unix and Windows tend to be the operating systems of choice.

Servers in The New Physics Building

maxwell.phys.ufl.edu

This is a departmental server. It is a Sun Enterprise 450 with 4 250Mhz CPUs, 1GB Main Memory and several disk drives. The operating system is Solaris 2.6. The services it provides include:

  • Login authentication for Annex terminal server (used for remote logins via modems). The daemon name is erpcd.
  • Secondary Domain Name Server

einstein.phys.ufl.edu

This is a departmental server. It is a Sun Enterprise 450 with 4 300Mhz CPUs, 1GB Main Memory and several disk drives. The operating system is Solaris 2.6. This machine needs to be running The services it provides include:

  • Printer host for all Sun machines.

neptune.phys.ufl.edu

This is a cmt server. It is a Sun Enterprise 450 with 4 300Mhz CPUs, 2GB Main Memory and several disk drives. The operating system is Solaris 2.6. This machine needs to be running before any of the other servers function properly. The services it provides include:

  • Domain Name Service for phys.ufl.edu, nuceng.ufl.edu. Reverse pointer lookups for subnets 17, 24, 156, 90 and 77. Secondary name services for subnet 16 reverse pointer file.
  • Yellow pages (NIS) master server for passwords, groups, aliases
  • Mail services and aliases for the entire department with the address phys.ufl.edu. It acts as the SMTP server and the POP server.
  • Home disk space for the condensed matter theory group and some other users

  • Routing between two network interfaces (subnet 64 and subnet 24).
  • Flexlm license server for several network licensed software including Island Productivity, PV-Wave, Lotus 123, Liken, Interleaf and Wordperfect.
  • X-terminal login access to the CMT Group faculty.
  • Node-Locked software including Mathematica, Matlab, Maple and SAS.

compass.phys.ufl.edu

This is the web server. It is a Sun E250 with 512 MB of memory running Solaris 2.7 . It acts as a:

  • World Wide Web Server for of the department

wombat.phys.ufl.edu

DECstation 3000/600 with 128 MB of memory running DEC Unix version 4.0D opearting system

  • Used by the astrophysics group

atlantic.phys.ufl.edu

This is a SGI O2 with 1 CPU, 575 MB memory and 3D graphics. It is primarily used for high end graphics and visualization projects and multimedia presentation making, color printing etc. It has a videoframer installed. It runs IRIX 6.5.

Alphastation 250 4/266 is a desktop server with 266 MHz, 21064A CPU.
Alphastation 500 5/333 is a desktop server with 333 MHz, 21164A CPU.
