  1. Login on the SGI machine with your Unix password
  2. Click on
    • Desktop
    • Open Unix Shell
  3. Type gscan & in the terminal window
  4. In the Select Profile popup box choose Kodak Photo CD and hit OK
  5. Click on Prescan All
  6. Adjust the red lines in the prescan image to only scan the areas you want
  7. Adjust the X Resolution and Y Resolution to 72 pixels / inch
  8. Click on Scan Image
  9. In the Select File popup box choose Tiff as the file type and give the file a name (for example test1.tiff) Now press OK
Tiff images are not very nice for use on the web. If you are going to put these images on a webpage then convert them to gif, jpeg, or PDF. You should experiment with the different file formats to see what best suits your images. To save the image as another format (example assumes the image is named test1.tiff):
  1. In the terminal type display test1.tiff &
  2. Click the right mouse button inside your image
  3. Click Save
  4. In the Browse and Select a File popup box click on Format
  5. Choose jpg or gif (pdf files can be generated, but are huge)
  6. Click on Select
  7. Click on Save
If you are saving a jpg then you will be asked for a quality value. You will have to experiment with this, I usually use 40.
To see the different file sizes for your different versions of the image type ls -l test1*
