PPP Installation on a home PC running Windows 95

  1. Open the Control Panel, which is easily accessed from the My Computer icon.
    • If your modem is already installed skip this section.
Click on the Modems icon, and add the appropriate modem. If you purchased a Gateway with Windows 95 already installed, this is probably already done.
      • From the Properties tab, set the maximum speed to 57600 if you have a V.34 modem or 38,400 if you have a V.32 modem.
      • Make sure the preferences are set correctly under the Connection tab. The preferences should be: Data bits: 8; Parity: none; Stop bits: 1.
      • Click on the Advanced button. Click on Use error control, and compress data. Use flow control, and set Hardware (RTS/CTS) active. Leave the other options cleared.
      • When you are done with the Modem settings, close the window.
    • If your TCP/IP is already configured skip this section.
Click on the Network icon, which is also accessed from the Control Panel.
      • At the Configuration tab:
      • If dial-up adapter is already present, go to the next step. Otherwise, Click on Add, and select the Adapter, Click on ADD and select Microsoft from the List of Manufacturers and add dialup adapter from the list of adapters. Select OK till you get to the Configuration Tab again.
      • Click on Add and select protocol this time. Choose Microsoft as the manufacturer. Highlight TCP/IP, and click OK.
      • The configuration tab should now list only the two items we selected. Any other components like IPX/SPX, NETBEUI, NETWARE should be removed.
      • Still from the Configuration tab, highlight TCP/IP, and click on properties. The three tabs we are interested in are IP address, DNS configuration, and Gateway. The other three are not relevant.
      • IP address: Choose Specify an IP address and enter yours: 128.227.064.xxx. Also enter the subnet mask: 255.255.255.0. The leading zeros will disappear once you type them in and say okay. Do not be alarmed.
      • DNS configuration: Choose enable DNS. For the host, enter your machine's name. The domain is phys.ufl.edu. For the DNS server search order, enter 128.227.064.002.
      • Gateway:Add 128.227.064.200.
      • When you are done, the computer may prompt you to reboot the machine. Go ahead and do so.
  2. Now, from My Computer, choose the Dial-up Networking folder instead of the Control Panel. If Dial-up Networking is not present, you can add it by going to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Communications, Details, Dial Up Networking. At this time, you may be prompted for the Windows 95 CD. If you machine has the distribution on disk, it will not do the prompting. While you are here, you may glance around for the other sets of software that is not installed by default like wallpapers, screen savers, games and some accessories.
    • Choose Make new connection. Enter a name for the connection; we recommend ufphysics. The modem should already be configured properly, so that button can be ignored.
    • Click on Next, and enter the number you will be dialing. This is 392-7001. Click on Finish.
    • In the Dial-up Networking folder, there should be a new icon for the connection you just created. Highlight it with a single click, and from the file menu, choose properties. Click on Server type.
      • For type, choose PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet. Check Enable Software Compression, TCP/IP, but nothing else. Click on the TCP/IP settings button.
      • Specify the IP address for your machine: 128.227.064.xxx.
      • Specify name server address:
        Primary DNS: 128.227.064.002.
        Secondary DNS: 128.227.064.007.
        WINS is not used: 0.0.0.0.
      • Click on Use IP header Compression and Use default gateway on remote network, Click OK for the Settings window, and for the Server types window.
      • From the general tab, click on the configure button.
      • Choose the options tab, and check Bring up terminal window after dialing. Click OK.
    • Double-click the Dial-up Networking icon you had created earlier, which brings up a connect to window. Enter your username and password, and connect. After the connection, login with your username and password.
    • From the annex prompt, type PPP and enter. Some gibberish should show up on the screen. Click on the Continue button. You should now be connected and able to use web browsers, X-window software or any other modem-related software.
  3. Run the Internet Icon on your desktop and connect to http://www.phys.ufl.edu to verify that your ppp connection is working correctly.
  4. Connect to ftp://ftp.phys.ufl.edu/pc/win95 area and download the WINZIP. Once it is installed you can download the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape, QVTNET, WS_FTP and other assorted software.
