  1. Login on the SGI machine with your Unix password

  2. Click on

    • Desktop
    • Open Unix Shell

  3. Type setenv HOMEDIR /usr/local/hepnet in the terminal window

  4. Add the line

  5. application/x-vtc; /usr/local/hepnet/vtc `cat %s`; description="Video Conference";"
    to your .mailcap file

  6. If there is a web page for the conference you want to join go there and type in the password, the video and audio windows will pop up
  7. If there is no web page then type
  8. /usr/local/hepnet/vtc -v MEETINGNAME utah.fnal.gov
Where MEETINGNAME is provided by the coordinator of the meeting. For example:
    /usr/local/hepnet/vtc -v HAC_Test utah.fnal.gov

  9. You will be asked for a password, type in the one given to you by the coordinator.
  10. Now two tools should be started by vtc: Vic and Vat. Vic is the video half and Vat the audio half of the conference. To transmit your video:
    •

    • click on the Menu button on the bottom of the Vic window
    • click on the Transmit button at the top left of the new popup (you should now see a little red light on the transmit button)
    • Set the Port to Camera Video Input in the same popup
Now Look at the Vic window and you should see a small (one inch sqare) image of your video feed. Click on yourself to enlarge the image.

Now that you are transmitting video you can click on the mute button just to the right of the small image of yourself. This will stop you from receiving your own video feed (do this to save on bandwidth) but everyone else will still see your video feed.

Now adjust your audio settings from the other window: VAT

    • Click on the Options button at the bottom left corner of the Vat window.
    • Set Mode to Full Duplex
    • Adjust other settings to match the image shown above, most of these are the defaults.
    • Dismiss the Vat Controls window
Wehn you wish to speak click the Right mouse button inside the Vat window. Hold the mouse button down while you speak, and for 1 second after you finish. If you are familiar with a Push To Talk microphone on a CB radio this is the same idea.
