International Summer Research Program in Gravitational-Wave Physics:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates around the world
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Tokyo (Projects were not available in 2013)
-
NAOJ Project 2014: "Internal thermal noise calculation method for KAGRA cradle-mirror system"
Mentors: Yoichi Aso and Raffaele Flaminio
-
UTRIP Project 2014: "Thermal Noise in Non-Equilibrium Steady State"
Mentor: Masaki Ando
- Resonant speed meter and displacement-noise free interferometer:
These are new detector configurations which could increase the sensitivity of future ground-based gravitational wave detectors in specific frequency bands. The student will work on one of these interferometer testbeds and will simulate and characterize its performance.
Mentor: Shuichi Sato
Related Project 2008: "3D Displacement and Frequency Noise Free Interferometry" - Quantum-non demolition and squeezed vacuum measurements:
Future ground-based gravitational wave detectors will use non-classical concepts such as squeezed vacuum or quantum-non demolition (QND) measurement techniques to overcome the fundamental noise sources radiation pressure noise and shot noise. The QND experiment will allow the student to gain hands-on experience on this cutting edge new technology and will study how it can be applied to gravitational wave detector.
Mentor: Shihori Sakata
Related Project 2008: "Measurement of Quantum Efficiency of a Photo Diode Using Radiation Pressure"
Related Project 2010: "Measurement of Quantum Efficiency of a Photo Diode Using Radiation Pressure" - DECIGO is a proposed space-based detector which could close the gap
between LISA and Advanced LIGO. DECIGO is in an early planning stage with
many opportunities for students to participate. Potential projects include
the design of the laser frequency stabilization system or the derivation
of requiremens for some of the subsystems.
Mentor: Seiji Kawamura - NOAJ Project 2010: "Quality Factor of a Single Pendulum for Use in Gravitational Wave Interferometry"
