The Wayne Bomstad II Memorial Award for Teaching Assistants
This award is in memory of Wayne Bomstad, an important member of the graduate student teaching team.
Discussion Sections
Hsin-Jung Lin receives the Wayne Bomstad Award for Discussion Sections. Presenting the award is the Physics Chairman, Prof. John Yelton. Ms Lin has been discussion TA for several semesters and is highly thought of by both the students she teaches and the faculty who organize the course. She is known for her upbeat and positive demeanor, and her patience and understanding with students who are having problems. Mrs. Shuminsky, Wayne's mother, added, "Congratulations Ms. Lin for being one of the outstanding females who is part of the Physics team at UF." Hsin-Jung's advisor is Katia Matcheva.
Laboratory Sections
Matt Carver receives the Wayne Bomstad Award for Labs. Presenting the award is the Physics Chairman, Prof. John Yelton. The students in Matt's lab section say he has a great ability to explain the material and they also appreciate his cheerful attitude at 7:25 in the morning when the class is scheduled. He is a reliable worker and definitely worthy of the Bomstad Award for TA of the year in labs. Mrs. Henrietta Shuminsky, Wayne's mother, added, "It is such a gift to be a good teacher. I have been a teacher for 30 years. Congratulations!" Matt's advisor is Darin Acosta.
Tom Scott Memorial Award
This award is made annually to a senior graduate student in experimental physics who has shown distinction in research. The award honors the memory of Professor Tom Scott who made significant contributions to the Department both as a Chair and as a noted researcher.
The recipient of this year's award is Tongguang Cheng. Tongguang is one of the key people in the recent discovery of the Higgs Boson in CMS. In particular, he made critical contributions to the recent measurements of the Higgs mass in the H->ZZ->4l channel. Tongguang's advisors are Guenakh Mitselmakher and Andrey Korytov.
The Charles F Hooper Memorial Award
This award is made annually to senior graduate students in physics who have shown distinction in research and teaching. The Award honors the memory of Professor Charles (Chuck) Hooper who made seminal contributions to the Department as a Chair, as a distinguished researcher, and as a beloved mentor/teacher.
The recipient of this year's award is Yan Wang.
Three papers have been written on the "Research in Theory of Disorder and Superconductivity in Iron-based Superconductors", in which Yan is the first author. Yan works day and night, yet still appears relaxed and smiling at all times. Yan's advisor is Peter Hirschfeld.
E. Raymond Andrew Memorial Award
This award is given to a senior graduate student in physics for distinction in research. This award honors Professor Raymond Andrew, who made numerous significant contributions to the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
The recipient of this year's award is Katie Leonard. Katie is smart and accompished at computations and is indepedent and self-motivated.
She has already published on "Graviton Corrections to Maxwell's Equations" and has submitted two more. Katie is on track to graduate
in a total of four years at grad school. Katie's advisor is Richard Woodard.
