Undergraduate Student Awards and Graduation Celebration for Spring 2011

On Friday, April 29, the department hosted a party in honor of graduating undergrad students and to recognize award recipients (2010-2011).

Triana Almeyda receives the Gene and Richard Garrett Award. Triana is a graduating senior in Astronomy/Physics (double major). The award recognizes her consistent and unselfish participation in various outreach activities for the local community sponsored by both SPS and UAS (Undergraduate Astrophysics Society). The award is presented by Dr. Richard Garrett. Peter Nguyen receives the Earl and Ruth Sawyer Award. Peter is graduating in Fall 2011 in Astronomy/Physics (double major) with minors in Math and Music. He has been serving as the President of SPS since Fall 2009. The award recognizes his strong leadership and dedicated service to SPS, especially in various activities in the community such as hosting DOE sponsored Regional Science Bowl for high school students two years in a row. Under his leadership, UF SPS is nationally recognized as an Outstanding Chapter for 2009-2010 and received a Marsh White Outreach award in 2011. Peter is also a recipient of Outstanding Leadership Scholarship in 2011. Physics Chairman Dr. John Yelton is presenting the award. Chris Reeg receives the Outstanding Undergraduate Senior Thesis Award (UF Graduate School) “Solid-State Deuterium NMR Study of Methyl Rotation in Precisely Branched Polyethylenes” mentored by Drs Bowers and Stanton. The award is presented by Physics Chairman, Dr. John Yelton.

• Two Goldwater Scholarship Awardees: Junior Icon Mazzacari (Biswas) and Junior Brian Williams (Ramond)
• Three University Scholars: Junior Erik Garcell (Lee), Sophjomore Matthew Gilbert (Rinzler), and Junior Brian Williams (Ramond)
• Superior Presentation award at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting Student Research Conference (Raleigh NC): Sophomore Alex Garner (Furic)
• FGLSAMP: The Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP) is one of 41 National Science Foundation LSAMP alliances nationwide designed to prepare students traditionally underrepresented in STEM for graduate study. Three Physics students received FGLSAMP scholarships: Erik Garcell (J), Klaus Smit (S), and Juan Contreras (J)
• FGLSAMP Expo 2011 was held February 3 - 6 in Jacksonville, FL. Eighteen scholars from UF attended the 18th Annual FGLSAMP Expo. Six of these scholars gave research presentations and competed against students from the 12 institutions that comprise the Florida-Georgia alliance. Two Physics student won the 2nd and 3rd in Oral Presentation Contest: Klaus Smit (2nd) “Adaptive feedback control of laser beam properties” (LIGO Group)Feedback Control of Laser Beam Properties and Erik Garcell (3rd) “Simulation of MEMS actuator” (Lee)
• Outstanding Oral Presentation Award in SPS sessions at 2011 APS March Meeting: Erik Garcell “Characterization of a MEMS actuator through simulation” (Lee)
