The Dirac–Bergmann formalism for handling constrained dynamical systems is applied to massive and massless spin-2 field theories in Minkowski space. In the process, it is shown that an extension of the formalism is required before the true Hamiltonian on the reduced phase space can be calculated. With this extension, the approach then allows a revealing exposition of the m-->0 limit of the massive theory, particularly of the requirement for the conservation of sources, and reconfirms the experimentally observable discontinuity which occurs at m=0.
