Parkin01.zip

Is a zip of Bob Coldwell’s recommended method for using the code RCBEXAM.

Directories Parkin01 and teaching are formed on drive C.  In addition two shortcuts are placed in teaching.  One is a help for getting to the various help files involving Parkin01, the other gets the user into dos in the teaching directory and invokes the file rcbexam.bat which gives a directory of the que files in teaching and starts the exam code.  This can also be started from the teaching directory by the command rcbexam final where the questions are in the files final.que. I recommend dragging these two shortcuts to the desktop.  In general they will keep track of the directions to the files.  If not right click on them and go to properties.  The changes are to the command line and should be obvious.

GMERGE.zip - gmerge.htm

This is a zip of the fortran for the code gmerge sometimes used by the physics department to merge and grade large classes.  It has recently been modified to include the registrar’s csv file for ease in uploading final grades.  The original is in ogmerge.  The exact grading scheme differs for each professor.  As a result somewhat more flexible general purpose codes such as excel may be preferred.  The gmerge output is in the form of a csv file, though not usually with this name.  This allows users to do preliminary grading with gmerge, then to follow up with excel combining the “best” of both codes.

Parkin01.exe

Is a self extracting version of the above zip.  This is extremely dangerous as viruses can be passed as self extracting zips.  The safest usage is to place this on your C drive first.  Then let your virus checker look at, then allow it to extract its files.  If you are on Bob Coldwell’s web page, this file is probably O.K.

General procedure

Parkin01 directions

The que files are written according to the ancient Parkin01 rules which are summarized in the helps.  The exam produces a proof in the .out file.  I usually edit this with notepad and in fact set notepad to open any .out file so that I can do this with a dopuble click of the cursor.  The first time or so, you should follow this with a NERPROOF.  Always try to use upper case in the menu items, I tried to be general … but.  The directions for submitting and getting the job are in the help files.  Produce the exams by entering the number desired and NEREXAM on the correct line.  The request EXAM on this line will put them all in the out file and you will have to print them on your own printer.  --- For a few make-up exams, this will work fine.  Do not lose the random seeds.

Once the exam has been given take the answer sheets and a diskette to OIR.  Look helpless and mutter Parkin01, please and give them the name that you have been using for the exam.  They will put a file name.oir on the diskette.  Transfer this to the directory teaching and now request GRADE in the menu.  The first evidence that the code has worked is in the .gra file which should give reasonable grades to your best students.  All of the old information is now in the .out file.

Uploading the results

Source Code

Parkbatf.zip contains the source code and txt directions for making both the PC part of RCBEXAM and the MVS part of RCBEXAM.  TEXBATF.ZIP contains the code for making texam  texam.html UNIX.zip contains the source code for an earlier TEXAM modified by Brent A Nelson <brent@phys.ufl.edu>  to make exams in Unix.  These are all protected by Cathy’s password.
