Directions for Producing Exams -- Parkin01 --

The exam procedure starts with a question file que.html on a PC or Mac. The filename can be any or fewer characters but the extension should be QUE.

The beginning portion of the code does a quick check of the exam file.  This will be a bit annoying to a beginner. An example of the kind of output at this stage is in brcbexam.html.  Keep trying, it may be necessary to remove most of the file to find something that works.  The code cannot proceed until it gets through this stage.  Experts will be glad to have it stop here rather than later.

The possible entries for 6 are PROOF, EXAM, GRADE and then NERPRO, NEREXA, NERGRA.  The only truly logical one with NER is NEREXA which causes the exams to be printed on the NERDC's high speed printers.  Exams produced at the NERDC can be graded on PC's.  This includes exams produced though CMS using older versions of the code. The random seeds in line 9 are placed in numerous files.  They are essential, the exams cannot be graded without them.

The question weight of 5 on question 18 in line 13 causes the weight to be printed with the question if it is entered before the exams are printed.

The proof run

The proof is in the file given on line 3.

Local exams

By changing PROOF to EXAM on line 6, the entire set of exams appears in the file given on line 3 (woodrd1.out). Copy this file to lpt1 and it will print on your printer. This may take a while.

NEREXAM

By changing PROOF to NEREXAM, the code will produce a job file ready for submission to nermvs.  The code on the NERDC and the code on the PC are the same.  The slight differences between the two machines are accounted for internally in the code.  It should produce -- and has been tested to produce -- the same results on either machine.  The difference is that the NERDC has no problem producing up to the limit of 3124 exams, while the local printer may have a few.

There is an extra menu when NER is in the menu on line 6.

The NERDC ACCESS ID is needed to construct a job name that can be retrieved by ftp.  The instructors name is needed to retrieve the inside print job.  Notice that you have a chance here to recover from not stating the number of exams on the last menu.  The code ends with a summary of the directions needed to ftp the file to nervmvs.

YOU HAVE MADE THE FILE WOODRD1.JOB
          WHICH PRINTS EXAMS
AT NERDC
NOW FTP TO nermvs.nerdc.ufl.edu
WITH THE user id (and password)
THEN SEND THE FTP COMMAND site filetype=jes
THEN put WOODRD1.JOB
THE COMMAND dir SHOWS A FILE WITH THE JOB NUMBER
THE COMMAND get THIS FILE DOWNLOADS
A FILE WITH CONFIRMATION THAT THE JOB HAS RUN
Stop - Program terminated.

The job file is submitted to the NERDC by ftp.  The basic idea is to transfer it to the nermvs job queue.  Then wait a few seconds to get back a file telling you that the job has run correctly.  The last step in the job goes to this file with this information.  An attempt has also been made to put information about most possible aborts in this file.  A detailed example is in ftp.html.
A common ftp error is to forget th quote site command.
550 Unable to create data set UFBOBC.WOODRD1.JOB for STOR command.
ftp> site filetype=jes
?Invalid command
ftp> quote site filetype=jes

Grading your exam

There are three types of student answer files.  The first is FILENAME.TXT file produced by your own scanner.  The second is FILENAME.OIR which is emailed to you from the Office of Instructional Resources (B213 Turlington; 392-0371).  The third is FILENAME.SAN which is created by the code from the OIR file.  The OIR file is redundant once the SAN file has been created.  Replacing NEREXAM in the menu with GRADE grades the exams locally.  Replacing NEREXAM in the menu with NERGRADE creates a JOB file for submission to NERDC.  This last is needed only if you expect that there is a mistake in PARKIN01.  The local grades should be identical to the NERDC grades.

Locally the grades appear in FILENAME.GRA.  The histogram is in FILENAME.ANS, and the graded exam ready for posting, containing also the statistics for the exam, are in FILENAME.OUT.  The NERDC grades will be printed out and held as an inside job.  A listing of the NERDC grades can be received from ftp as JOB####.

GMERGE will ask for the names of the GRA f iles to be added together.  It causes the results of exams XXX, YYY and ZZZ to be merged and tentative grades assigned.
