Final Exam and End-Of Term Announcements

Final Exam Time & Place:  Friday 14 December 7:30 AM, NPB 2002 [our classroom]

Coverage: Comprehensive [Chapters 1-8 of R&K;  Rosenbaum, Chapters 2, 8, 10]

Format: as previously. You will be asked to answer 8 of 10 questions [5 each of numerical problems and discussion].  Questions will be similar but not identical to those on previous exams and homework.

Final Exam Bonus:   Those not opting for a term paper [see below] may earn a possible 10-point bonus by handing in with your exam a previously prepared, detailed analysis of your car's actual driving costs per mile.
Don't have a car?  Use figures from your parents' car or the car of a friend [but please indicate this].
Guidelines:  Your analysis must include:
    Make, year, & model of car
    Purchase price  [If it's leased, use the annual or monthly lease charges]
    Approximate annual mileage driven and estimated cost of fuel
    Insurance costs
    Any other costs [tires, repairs, lube, towing,etc.]

Term Paper Option: Those who did poorly on exams are allowed the option of a term paper to partially compensate for poor scores.   Maximum 40 points [half of an exam], and the paper will be graded carefully!  Term Paper Guidelines:
    1. Topic must be energy-related and approved in advance by the instructor.  No duplication of topics permitted.
    2. Length:  Approximately 10 pages, double spaced [but no extra-wide margins, please!!].  Obviously, in any paper
          content is much more important than length!
    3.  References:   minimum of 8  major reference sources, no more than half of which may be Internet-based.
        Printed works that can be viewed on the Internet are not considered 'Internet-based'.  'Major' means books or
        full-length magazine/journal articles, not brief newspaper mentions.  The textbook may not be used as a reference.
    4. Due date/time: No later than  4:30 PM Tuesday 11 December.

R & K Ch.  7- Conservation: Home heating/cooling/insulation.  R-values, Degree-days & use thereof.  Appliances &
    lighting.

R & K Ch.  8- Transportation:  Power & energy requirements of cars and other devices.  Energy storage.  Alternate
        fuels.  Mass transit.

Rosenbaum Ch. 10- Explain [including how they relate to energy issues]:
Transboundary problems & politics
Environmental diplomacy
Climate diplomacy [ozone, acid rain, & warming issues]
