Abstract: We discuss the potential for gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO and LISA to probe the early Universe. There are many possible sources of a stochastic gravitational wave background (the gravitational analog of the cosmic microwave background radiation). We discuss the various possible sources, including inflation, cosmic strings, phase transitions, and dynamics of extra dimensions, and the prospects for distinguishing between different sources and the information they could bring about the early Universe.
