Abstract: Using the world-line influence functional method for charged particles moving in a quantum field, Johnson and Hu [Phys. Rev. D65 (2002) 065015] recently derived a Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac-Langevin equation , which shows explicitly how the stochastic and semiclassical radiation reaction equations arise from quantum field theory. Galley Hu and Lin has generalized these equations to curved spacetime, showing that the gravitational radiation reaction (MSTQW) equations are obtained in their deterministic classical limit. The existence of stochastic radiation reaction equations opens up inquires into whether stochastic behavior accumulated over time can cause instabilities in semiclassical gravity [B. L. Hu, Albert Roura and E. Verdaguer, Phys. Rev. D 70 (2004) 044002] or possibly exhibit in the self-force for astrophysical or primordial gravitational waves.
