PHY 2005 - Summer 2000
Exam 2 Announcement

Mid-Term 2 will be held in class on Friday, July 7. The exam will start promptly at 9:30 am.

You should bring a No. 2 pencil, an eraser, and a scientific calculator to the exam. You may also bring three formula sheets (8.5" x 11" paper or smaller, no problem solutions allowed): one from each of the two previous exams, plus one sheet covering new topics. No other written materials will be permitted.

The exam will consist of 15 multiple-choice questions covering the following material from Bueche and Wallach (B&W):
    Chapter 22 Sections 1-9 and 13;
    Chapter 23 Sections 1-6, 8, and 12;
    Chapter 24 Sections 1-10, excluding the parts of 24.8 dealing with the phase angle phi. You do need to be able to use Eq. (24.6).

There will be roughly five questions from each chapter.

The type of questions will be roughly as follows:
    ten problems at B&W's no-star or one-star level;
    two problems at B&W's two-star level;
    three sets of true/false statements (see example below).

The following is a sample true/false question:
    An electron is located between the plates of a charged parallel-plate capacitor. Which one of the following statements is FALSE?
(1) The electric field acting on the electron points towards the negative plate.
(2) If the electron moves from the positive plate to the negative plate, the electric field does positive work.
(3) If the electron is released from rest near the negative plate, its subsequent motion decreases its electrical potential energy.
(4) The electrostatic force acting on the electron points towards the positive plate.
(5) If the electron is released from rest near the negative plate, its subsequent motion increases its kinetic energy.
