PHY 2005 - Summer 2000
Topics Covered

The material to be covered by each exam will be listed below. (Be warned that the course tends to be cumulative, so you may need to draw on ideas covered in previous exams.)

Section numbers below refer to the textbook (Bueche and Wallach).
Mid-Term 1 Electrostatics
      Sections 19.1-19.15.
Circuit Elements
Sections 20.1-20.12.
Direct Current Circuits
Sections 21.1-21.3.
You will be asked to analyze one-loop and two-loop circuits.
Mid-Term 2 Magnetism
Sections 22.1-22.9, 22.13
Induced Emf's
Sections 23.1-23.6, 23.8, 23.12
Time-Varying Currents and Fields
Sections 24.1-24.10
In Section 24.8, you can ignore everything related to the angle phi.
Mid-Term 3 Light Waves
Sections 25.1, 25.2, 25.4, and 25.5.
Reflection and Refraction
Sections 26.1-26.7 and 26.9-26.12.
Lenses and Optical Instruments
Sections 27.1-27.5, 27.7, and 27.9.
Final All the topics above, plus the following new material:
Interference and Diffraction of Waves
Sections 28.1-28.7
Physics of the Atom
Sections 29.3-29.5, 29.7, and 29.8.
In Section 29.3, you need only understand the concept of photons and the existence of a well-defined photon energy (e.g., Example 29.4). You will not be tested on the photoelectric effect (e.g., Example 29.3).
