The exam will be closed-book, and will cover all material discussed in the course up to and including the chapter on one-dimensional wave mechanics. Approximately 2/3 of the exam will be devoted to a question on one-dimensional wave mechanics. You are advised to work through the study guide One-Dimensional Wave Mechanics, which was distributed today. Questions based on any of the problems [except 2(d), 3(d), and 4] in this guide may appear on the exam.

Sep 27 Distributed Homework 4 (due Oct 4).
Sep 24 Class tomorrow will start at 1:00 p.m. and will run straight through to 2:45 p.m. without a break. I apologize for any inconvenience caused.

A revised version of the handout Infinite-Dimensional Vector Spaces has been posted. Item 2 has been modified to clarify one point and correct an error concerning the composition of the dual space in example (a).

Sep 20 Distributed Homework 3 (due Sep 27).
Sep 12 Class will meet as usual on Thursday, September 13.
Sep 11 UF classes (including PHY 6645) have been suspended as of noon today, effective until further notice. You should follow local news sources to check when classes resume.

You may get started on Homework 2, if you wish. This assignment will be distributed during the next class (whenever it is held). The due date will be one week from that class.

You may find this handout on Infinite-Dimensional Vector Spaces useful in tackling Homework 2. They set down in writing some of the material covered in class that does not appear in Shankar.

Sep 6 Reading assignment: Before next class, read Shankar Ch. 2, Sects. 5-8. The aim is for you to familiarize yourself with the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics. This material will not be covered in class.
Aug 30 Distributed Homework 1 (due Sep 6).

Reading assignment: Before next class, read Shankar Ch. 1, Sects. 8-10.

The course syllabus has been slightly revised to satisfy the new UF Policy on Course Syllabi. The only significant changes are the addition of statements concerning academic honesty and the procedure whereby students with special needs can obtain classroom accommodations.

Aug 23 Distributed course syllabus.

Reading assignment: Before next class, read Shankar Ch. 1, Sects. 1-7. The definitions presented in Sections 1 and 2 will be covered only briefly in class.
