FAQs
Q. What should we study to get good scores on discussion quizzes?
A. Focus on homework problems. Quiz problems are closely related to assigned homework problems. You should be able to solve assigned problems without referring to your textbook You're not allowed to use a formula sheet during a quiz, so you will have a tough time if you cannot recall equations you need to solve a problem. It is a good idea to go over all the homework problems a day before a quiz. You don't need to solve every problem to the end; just check if you remember the equations needed to solve each problem.

Q. What should I do if I forget to bring a calculator to class?
A. First, let me know. Normally I bring a calculator to discussion, which will be lended on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you have a regular cell phone, you can use it as a calculator. However, you need to let me know it in advance, otherwise I might consider you are cheating!

Q. The quiz in my section was harder than those in other sections this week. Is this fair?
A. Sometimes you get a harder problem, but some other times you get easier one. I am choosing quiz problems so that the difficulty of the quiz will be the same for all the sections on average.

Q. How do you grade a quiz? Do you grade quizzes based on a specific scheme?
A. Here is a rough idea:

  • Your name & UFID are worth 1 point. Technically this is an attendance grade. Hence as long as you come to class and submit a quiz, then you will get at least 1 point.
  • Each quiz is divided into two parts. part a) and b). Each part is graded out of 2 points.
Normally I grade each part as follows:
  • 2 points for correct answers with perfect solutions.
  • 1.5 points for almost perfect solution with minor mistakes such as algebraic errors or miscalculations.
  • 1 point for solutions on a right track with some conceptual mistakes.
  • 0.5 point for solutions in a wrong directions or solutions with major conceptual mistakes.
  • 0 point for blanks or scribbles.
